Environmental ScientistResponsibilities

Summary: The Environmental Scientist performs site investigations, assessments and surveys to sample, measure and analyze air, water, material, and soil. The Environmental Scientists is required to communicate with the project manager, other scientists and technicians, client representatives, contractors representative and others as applicable regarding the construction site, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection requirements and results. The Environmental Scientist must be able to identify, evaluate and recommend risk and remediation strategies/designs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Projects may include Phase I/II environmental site assessments, ACM and LBP surveys, tank closure assessments, asbestos abatement, storm water management, and site planning and permitting.

Work in conjunction with other Field Staff to ensure mutual project and personal development goals are being met.

Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.

Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.

Performs site visits, field observations and field data collection or assignments.

Prepare applicable permit applications, risk assessments and technical documents including proposals, reports and regulatory agency correspondence.

Proficient scientific professional responsible for conducting site testing and making recommendations for systems design on smaller projects of minimal complexity.

May assist more senior scientists/engineers on large, more complex projects.

Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.

Conduct site visits, records field observations and data collection, and conducts other project related field assignments.

Will have client contact pertaining to specific projects/tasks (i.e., client and telephone interviews).

May assist in compiling the scope of work for routine site investigations to measure and sample physical and non-physical properties of soil from a hydrogeological, geological, or environmental standpoint.

Responsible for developing written proposals to clients for approval by senior level professionals.

Evaluates moderately complex laboratory and field data and assembles in written reports.

May serve as team member and participate in meetings and communications with client pertaining to specific projects/tasks.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, geology, environmental engineering or related discipline; or a minimum of three years of related experience.

Masters Degree preferred, but not required.

ACI Field Testing Technician Grade 1 or equivalent preferred, but not required

OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Training preferred, but not required

Possess strong interpersonal and decision-making skills; must be able to interact in person and virtually with individuals at all levels

Strong organizational skills

Competent in conflict and crisis management

Must be able to pass background check, drug screen and have acceptable driving record

Physical Requirements:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the office areas but can be very loud in the lab with testing equipment running as well as in the field on a typical construction site with heavy equipment. The Scientist must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. A good sense of balance would be equally important as a safety issue.

Travel:

Local and non-local travel will be required for this position.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time position. Dependent on workload, hours may be somewhat flexible, and some late evenings and weekends may be required.
