General position overview:

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks an attorney to work in our Florida office. The emphasis of the position will be to advocate for the protection of Florida species from threats including habitat loss, climate change, mining, oil and gas development, and water pollution, but the work may expand throughout the southeast and Caribbean. The staff attorney will work as part of a team using law and advocacy, including lobbying and campaign development and management, toward reforming industry and other practices that are imperiling Florida's plants, animals, wild places, and the marine ecosystems throughout the region.

Main duties:

Litigate cases to gain results that will protect Florida species and habitats.

Develop and manage campaigns aimed to further the goals of the Center's mission.

Advocate and lobby for administrative and legislative policies for conservation through scientific and legal comments, oral testimony, policy analysis, petitions for rulemaking, and effective communications.

Engage in media advocacy though writing press releases, developing relationships with media contacts, and delivering effective, timely statements to reporters.

Engage the public and opinion leaders to protect Florida species through campaign activities such as public speaking, rallies, action alerts, opinion editorials, and outreach.

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills include:

At least two years of civil litigation experience, environmental law;

Excellent writing, communication, research, and oral advocacy skills;

Strong work ethic and time management skills;

Willingness to aggressively advocate and lobby for conservation issues; and

Ability to work independently and as a part of an effective team.

We prefer candidates have:

Familiarity with federal environmental laws;

Experience planning and implementing environmental campaigns;

Scientific literacy, background in marine or environmental science;

Past lobbying experience; and

A demonstrated commitment to environmental protection.

Salary will be $55,000 to $70,000, commensurate with experience.
