NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS) is responsible for the health and safety of our nation's coastal and oceanic environment. The Monitoring and Assessment Branch within the NCCOS Stressor Detection and Impacts Division requires a Senior Environmental Scientist to support new and existing chemical contaminant and bioeffects research in the Great Lakes basin and tributaries, this research is based on a decade of data collections from projects supported by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The position will support the development of manuscripts in peer reviewed publications, and assistance in writing NOAA reports and technical memoranda from data collected by the Great Lakes Mussel Watch team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is for a senior environmental scientist, focused on characterizing and understanding the role of chemical contaminants throughout the Great Lakes watersheds. The successful candidate will support the analysis of contaminants of emerging concern and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon results and development of several types of publications. Specific tasks include:
Support, task driven assignments to analyze, interpret and draw conclusions from previous data and information collected in the past and current Mussel Watch surveys in the Great Lakes region.
Assist in the planning and design of scientifically and statistically rigorous efforts for up-coming Mussel Watch Great Lakes field surveys, coordinating the use of Branch resources to build synergies with, and leverage resources from partners and stakeholders.
Support Branch investigators in the analysis and incorporation of alternative data sources to enhance the strength of products delivered to managers and stakeholders.
Prepare reports, presentations and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
Minimum Qualifications Required
PhD plus five years or M.S. plus 10 years of professional experience in Aquatic or Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry or related fields with a proven publication record.
Published in the field of contaminant chemistry in coastal or lacustrine environments.
Knowledge and experience with contaminant monitoring and/or characterization in aquatic systems using sediment, water or biological samples.
Knowledge and experience in QA/QC of contaminant chemistry data.
Familiarity with EPA toxicological databases (ECOTOX) and other relevant chemical contaminant databases.
Duty Station will be Silver Spring, MD; however remote work will be allowed as needed basis.
