*Position Summary*

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for development, guidance, and implementation of environmental, occupational health, and fire/life safety programs aimed at protecting the campus community and to achieve and maintain compliance with numerous federal, state, and local regulatory statutes that govern these programs. This department reports to the Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs

Federal, State, and local regulations and enforcement require the management and timely disposal of hazardous waste from the campus. The handling of hazardous materials is also strictly regulated. Other regulated programs that require oversight and compliance by this position include: Universal Waste handling, biohazardous waste regulations, the campus Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan, Mixed Waste, PCB-containing electrical equipment, Air Pollution, Storm-water, Industrial Wastewater, and emergency spill response.

Hazardous waste management practices include collection, transport, segregation, storage, and documentation of all hazardous waste streams generated from SDSU facilities (to include classrooms, offices, laboratories, physical plant operations) and auxiliaries. Hazardous waste streams to include but not limited to chemicals, asbestos, medical wastes, universal wastes.

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator will assist with environmental compliance, research safety, and regulatory projects including campus stormwater inspections, generator inspections and permits, spill prevention control and countermeasure (SPCC) inspections, sewer sampling, coordinating with vendors, fume hood certifications, distributing PPE and red bags, chemical inventory, door placarding, and training coordination.

The EHS Coordinator will be a team participant as a campus hazardous waste responder and be available after hours.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

*Education and Experience*

Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

*Licenses Required*

Valid California driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

*Specialized Skills*

* Storm Water and Air Pollution program awareness
* Working knowledge of federal, state and local hazardous waste management regulations
* Working knowledge of good laboratory practices, safe chemical handling, storage and packaging procedures
* Understanding of basic chemical principles including hazards associated with different types of chemicals
* Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills
* Computer skills; Microsoft Office and G-Suite Applications
* Ability to lift 50 pounds unaided and manipulate 55-gallon drums of hazardous waste
* Ability to wear a respirator and pass an annual physical examination

*Preferred Qualifications*

* Basic hazardous materials awareness
* Experience in the following areas: hazardous waste management, environmental compliance, research safety, health and safety.
* Bachelor's Degree
* Current 40-hr. HAZWOPER certification

*Compensation and Benefits*

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. *Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,083 per month. *

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,288 - $6,347 per month.

*SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy*

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
