Environmental Health & Safety Professional
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for an Environmental Health & Safety Professional for the Safety & Security department. This is a full-time, permanent staff position.
Purpose of the Position : The primary purpose of this position is to implement and analyze the University health and safety program; monitor occupational health programs; inspect facilities; ensure safety regulatory compliance; emergency preparedness; investigations; assessments; and work with campus stakeholders to ensure the safety of the campus community.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; and four years of progressive experience needed to perform the work required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
Essential Job Duties : Promote a proactive safety culture by utilizing professional knowledge, communication and team building skills. Conduct inspections, investigations and industrial hygiene sampling. Test, calibrate and manage industrial hygiene equipment. Audit employee work practices and compliance programs. Facilitate employee and management level safety training. Collect, analyze and report safety data. Support safety emergency situations. Serve as a safety subject matter expert for project teams, departments and campus community.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in the life sciences, engineering, business or related field. Relevant certifications (i.e. ASP, CSP, CIH). Demonstrated experience as an asbestos inspector or accredited to take asbestos samples. Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of asbestos, construction, ventilation systems and electrical safety. Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in higher education, health care, or public sector. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting safety compliance policies, procedures, and regulations. Demonstrated experience with calibrating industrial hygiene equipment and new technology systems.
