Overview:

We are seeking a results-oriented Deputy Director, Environmental Safety & Health that will work collaboratively our ES&H Director/Chief Safety Officer (CSO) in all aspects of ES&H operations from strategy to daily activities to ensure that ES&H strategy, management systems, and daily operations support the Laboratory mission, and strategy while promoting PPPL's values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position will help to lead highly visible laboratory-wide environmental, safety, and health integrated programs of best practices, certifications, standards, guidance, procedures, and management systems. This position will help to provide leadership, technical direction, strategic oversight, and policy development that enables line management to maintain a safe workplace, promotes safety as an institutional core value, and ensure that scientific and technical research activities are conducted in compliance with applicable policies and regulations. The position must demonstrate flexibility, diplomacy, excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to make intelligent and effective decisions in complex situations.

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Lead by example to proactively promote principles of stewardship, safety, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability.

Assure that ES&H programs and management systems are timely, accurate, concise, and exhibit constructive insight appropriate for intended audiences.

Serve with ES&H Director and other stakeholders to champion a meaningful safety culture and in implement that vision throughout the organization by advancing ES&H vision and strategies to support PPPL's scientific mission.

Assist in the planning, dissemination, and execution of ES&H operational strategy, accountable for the performance results of multidisciplinary teams against such strategy in support of the Laboratory research mission.

Proactively work with the CSO to build partnership relationships with all levels of the Laboratory community, including collaboration with Department of Energy (DOE), external regulatory agencies, the general public, other National Laboratories, and Princeton University, to deliver quality and excellence in customer service

Provide leadership and direction to support the ES&H Division's continuous process improvement program, including measurement systems, benchmarking, and surveys.

Support building a team atmosphere that allows prioritization of safe operations and open collaborative discussions.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Bachelors' degree and 8 years of progressive experience in a related ES&H discipline or engineering field, and/or equivalent experience and education required.

Advanced degree in a related field preferred.

Experience with operational oversight of environmental, safety, security, radiological protection, and/or risk management programs.

Experience in implementing and improving enterprise-wide policies and programs where there are competing interests and goals of multiple constituencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong skills in the areas of leadership, team building, management, relationship building, resource management, and communications.

Ability to lead and manage diverse ES&H disciplines, build consensus, and collaborate among key stakeholders.

Experience managing ES&H programs at a research and development organization. Experience and knowledge of the DOE ES&H regulatory environment is strongly preferred.

Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and with key stakeholders.

Highly developed sense of confidentiality with the ability to develop and maintain the trust as well as confidence of lab leadership and outside stakeholders.

Ability to provide advice on problems and issues that may be vague and less sharply defined, for which there may be no precedent.

Certificates and Licenses:

Board certification in a related professional discipline (e.g., CIH, CSP, CHP, PE, etc.) preferred.
