The Principal Scientist will be responsible for the development and execution of research plans in support of advancing our biologic assets in the therapeutic areas of fibrosis and immuno-oncology. The successful applicant will be an exceptional scientist capable of directing research efforts and collaborating with KOLs in specific areas of interest to the company. Responsibilities include design, coordination, and implementation of key research studies aimed at lead candidate selection, animal proof-of concept, pharmacology, mechanism of action, and other innovative studies aimed at the selection and advancement of lead drug candidates into and through clinical development. This work will be done through contracts with CROs as well as external biotech and academic labs. The successful candidate will publish and present research results at annual research conferences and become a KOL in their own right. This person can be based in Norwood Ma as a hybrid or we are open to remote candidates.

The Principal Scientist will work under the direction of the Sr. Director, Research and work closely with CMC and toxicology/DMPK, as well as clinical and regulatory groups to support lead candidate selection and research. The Principal Scientist will be responsible for execution and coordination of all research activities on potential lead candidates including lead characterization and optimization, mechanism of action, and in vitro and in vivo pharmacology studies. In addition, the individual will work with the clinical team on selection of indication, target engagement, and patient selection studies. Success will be dependent on your ability to work collaboratively in a team matrix, effectively direct activities at CROs, and your interactions with KOLs and academic labs.

The ideal candidate has a proven track record of seven or more years of research experience (ideally in Biotech or Pharma) successfully planning and implementing innovate research studies involving monoclonal antibodies in fibrosis and/or oncology, aimed at characterization, selection and advancement of clinical candidates through Phase 1 development. They will be self-driven, resourceful, innovative, very organized, and enjoy working in a dynamic team environment in a virtual biotech model.

Required Skills/Experiences:
  • Ph.D. in Biology, Pharmacology, Immunology or related scientific discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in pharmaceutical research and development, ideally in industry, in the fields of fibrosis and oncology
  • Hands-on experience in screening and optimization of monoclonal antibodies, including phage display optimization, characterization of antibody-target interactions, expression and purification, assessment of developability, and refinement to address potential liabilities.
  • Deep understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms of fibrosis. A working knowledge of pharmacological models of fibrosis is essential, as well as the ability to translate to clinical studies.
  • Extensive experience across multiple areas: metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney diseases (e.g. diabetic nephropathy), chronic liver diseases (NASH), pulmonary diseases (PAH and IPF), fibroproliferative disorders, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
  • Experience evaluating monoclonal antibodies for immune oncology applications, including in vivo efficacy models, biomarker discovery and receptor occupancy studies is also highly desirable
  • Experience in planning, designing, budgeting, and implementing research studies internally and through external vendors and CROs.
  • Excellent skills in networking with external partners to identify, evaluate and execute on new opportunities for strategic collaboration/investment
  • An outstanding publication/patent record.
  • Exceptional knowledge of scientific area of responsibility
  • Ability to ask critical scientific questions and formulate original hypotheses
  • Demonstrates creativity and novel approaches to solving scientific problems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivation to bring novel treatments to patients in need
