Position Summary:

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist manages and maintains the environmental health and safety program for the Justrite Safety Group's Accuform in Brooksville, FL and National Marker Company (NMC) in Smithfield RI.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Administer the safety policy to minimize the number and severity of incidents, accidents, and injuries.
  • Establish target areas and long-range incident/accident prevention and cost control objectives including working with the HR Manager to reduce worker's compensations costs.
  • Lead the Safety Committee and other employee involvement initiatives to achieve organizational safety goals.
  • Maintain a system for reporting, monitoring, and correcting safety problems. Review incident reports using these systems to help determine what corrective actions need taken to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Manage Workers' Compensation Claims and Return to Work programs.
  • Serve as the interface for dealing with and solving issues with monitoring agencies such as OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, state regulatory groups etc. Participates in formal inspections of plant safety and issues a report to the monitoring agency to formally document corrective actions taken, involving both Operations and HR.
  • Develop a baseline of safe work performance expectations and work practices by conducting job safety and hazard analysis, encouraging prompt accident/incident reporting, and providing guidance to supervisors for corrective action.
  • Investigate injuries to identify root cause and complete company wide Safety Alerts
  • Ensure that all areas are inspected for any conditions that pose potential problems and make recommendations for major projects and procedures that implement and maintain safety measures throughout the entire organization.
  • Maintain the Safety Library by surveying and keeping current on all relevant topics to ensure ongoing preparedness on topics related to safety improvement and hazard prevention.
  • Monitor and control industrial hygiene related to the long-term effects of factors such as chemical exposure, noise, lighting, heat, humidity, and other variables.
  • Ensure the appropriate Emergency Equipment is made available. Including and not limited to, CPR kits, AED's, Eyewash, Chemical Spill Kit, and Safety Glasses.
  • Develop, plan, implement and conduct new hire safety training for employees on work site safety practices
  • Communicate safety activities and results to the workforce
  • Analyzes trends, identifies gaps, and uses metrics to develop targeted training plans based upon findings, incident, or operational change to develops initial and recurrent training programs, curriculum, and materials. Ensures training content is updated, relevant, and supports current global EHS Standards. Incorporates measurement and assessment tools to support all training.
  • Conduct Forklift and Heavy Machinery training.
  • Maintain OSHA 300 log and other required reports and ensure compliance of required postings.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of applicable government regulations and safety compliance standards. Assist, plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with OSHA and other local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Conduct site inspections, checking for and addressing hazards that may put workers at risk. Make sure all employees are adhering to PPE requirements.
  • Identifying and advising on PPE and other protective clothing and safety equipment that may provide better protection dependent upon the specific construction site.
  • Develop a work environment which reflects a commitment to protecting the health and safety of all employees and subcontractors.
  • Responsible for training and certification in First Aid, CPR and any other safety training applicable to specific job responsibilities.
  • Prepare and maintain company incident program. This includes thorough investigation of all incidents and development of programs to prevent re-occurrences.
  • Maintain communication with management to ensure safety procedures are being followed by all employees, including the proper use of PPE
  • Responsible for any other projects and duties that may be assigned as needed.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred - Safety Engineering/Management, Public Health, Environment and/or Biological or Educational Sciences
  • 3 or more years of experience in safety, technical and risk analysis training required; combination of education and experience may be considered as equivalent. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred.
  • Basic Mathematics logic and reasoning
  • Comfortable presenting to all levels of employees and management on safety metrics and initiatives
  • Ability to write and update safety procedures

  • Problem Solving: ability to identify complex issues and resolve them
  • Computer skills: advanced user in Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Organization: ability to manage multiple tasks, cases, and projects while prioritizing each item
  • Confidentiality: ability to manage associate questions or Workers' Compensation situations with the required confidentiality, following HIPAA guidelines
  • Mathematics: basic math
  • Public Speaking: comfortable presenting to all levels of employees and management on safety metrics and initiatives
  • OSHA Knowledge: Familiarity with general requirements, with the ability to research regulations and maintain knowledge of changing requirements
