Salmon Coast Field Station Society is a charitable conservation organization and hub for coastal research located in Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis territory, in the Broughton Archipelago, near Echo Bay. Salmon Coast supports innovative research, public education, community outreach, and ecosystem awareness to achieve lasting conservation measures for the lands and waters of the Broughton Archipelago and surrounding areas. 

 

We are hiring one person to fill the role of Station Coordinator. The successful candidate will serve as the on-site manager who leads the day-to-day operations of the station and reports to the Executive Director. Through collaboration and coordination with station leadership, staff, volunteers and contractors, the Station Coordinator will:

  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for staff, volunteers and station users;
  • Facilitate and support research and education user groups, including scheduling and coordination of users and station facilities;
  • Support outreach and communications, including social media updates, speaking with visitors, and community relations;
  • Work as part of a collaborative team to organize training and other events;
  • Support administrative aspects of station operation;
  • Assist in care and maintenance of gardens;
  • Assist in weekly sampling of juvenile salmon using a beach seine at sites in the Broughton Archipelago;
  • Have an opportunity to contribute to other research programs at the station.

 

Required experience and qualifications:

  • Marine boating experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with field-based research projects
  • Marine Basic First Aid and CPR certifications, or willingness to achieve these certifications for the position
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Certificate, or willingness to achieve this certification for the position
  • Restricted Operator Certificate Marine Radio License (ROCM), or willingness to achieve this certification for the position

 

An ideal candidate would have:

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Experience in leadership roles and ability to effectively manage staff and volunteers
  • A positive attitude when working in physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions
  • Experience and/or comfort with remote living in communal situations
  • Interest and awareness of local conservation issues
  • Other skills/interests that complement the needs of the station (photography, social media, gardening, carpentry, boat maintenance, education/outreach experience)

 

Terms: We are seeking one candidate for an initial 6-8 month contract starting on or around January 10, 2022. We offer $3,200-$3,500/month for an average of 35 hours per week. The initial period of employment Jan 10 ~ March 15 may be completed virtually. From ~March 15 - September 10 the Coordinator would be expected to live at the station, and communal housing is provided. Pending favorable performance and availability of funding it is possible that this position would be extended beyond the term of the initial contract. There may also be opportunities to extend the period of employment or provide additional paid hours each week by contributing to research programs at the station on a project by project basis.
