The has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time Environmental Lab Manager (Research Technologist Supervisor, 50% FTE).
The Environmental Lab Manager (0.50 FTE) oversees daily operations of the environmental labs, primarily located in More Hall, with additional space in Wilcox Hall and Benjamin Hall Interdisciplinary Research Building. This position is responsible for establishing the culture of safety, ensuring students are properly trained, and maintaining the lab space. Therefore, the manager will work closely with environmental engineering faculty, researchers and students to oversee operations, instrumentation, and safety of the laboratory spaces. The manager will work closely with the University of Washington Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) program and an environmental engineering faculty director to implement health and safety policies and practices. The manager will be responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting and general upkeep of analytical instruments (e.g., high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ion chromatography (IC), gas chromatography (GC), and various spectroscopy systems) and common equipment (e.g. fume hoods, ultrapure water systems, ovens), and may also participate in development of proposals for equipment upgrades. The manager may also supervise a laboratory technician or student assistant(s), and is responsible for providing guidance, managing workload, and assigning tasks to these positions.
Research and lab management (75%): manage supply ordering and inventory; track expenses; develop and implement laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures for instrumentation in the laboratory spaces; work with instrument vendors to perform general maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments and general laboratory equipment; conduct training with researchers for instrumentation use and maintenance; facilitate laboratory walk-throughs and perform onboarding of new researchers; communicate with researchers, research staff, students and faculty to ensure research activities run smoothly; laboratory space cleaning and management; attend monthly laboratory meetings with staff, researchers and faculty to discuss concerns related to laboratory operation, health and safety.
Laboratory safety & compliance (25%): manage safety protocols; oversee UW EH&S lab safety compliance and prepare and manage lab inspections; manage chemical inventory; dispose of biological and chemical waste; track research team laboratory trainings and remind users of expiring trainings; organize protocols and other files in a central location.

May supervise temp staff help or student employees.
A Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate related field of science or technology AND two years' experience in a field applicable to the assignment.
A Master's Degree may be substituted for one year of required experience. Experience at the professional-level may be substituted, year-for-year, for the degree.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Experience with water quality test equipment (e.g., pH meters, balances, pipettes, compressed gas tanks), analytical instruments (e.g., UV-vis spectrophotometer, fluorimeter, HPLC, IC, GC) and laboratory techniques. Experience with analytical sample preparation and analysis protocols. Familiarity with other protocols related to water treatment and experience with data analysis software.
