We are seeking a strong matrix leader who will contribute to NIBR's mission of creating and advancing a "new science of therapeutics" by leading the global Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) portfolio, in collaboration with the CBT Leadership Team, to enhance the culture and science of CBT across our Cambridge, Basel, and Emeryville teams. You'll lead and work together with the CBT Portfolio Management team to ensure effective management and optimal alignment with strategy and deliverables, and will have accountability for the overall department goals. This role will build and realize a future-oriented vision for the portfolio together with the leadership team, continuously evolve the strategy, drive strategic decision-making, and ensure that CBT resources are applied in line with strategic priorities.

The incumbent must have a broad scientific / technology knowledge base, have had previous experience in portfolios encompassing leading external and internal scientific collaborations and technology development, and have the ability to incorporate new relevant scientific insights and internal/external innovation into strategic and practical directions.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Drive strategic planning with the department's leadership team, to develop, maintain, and execute the 3-5-year strategy that connects across the platform, and drives innovative pipeline impact. Accountable for annual innovation and long-term CBT goals in partnership with the leadership team. Collaborates with project/ initiative leaders and leadership team members to ensure our focus areas are on track, helps create forums to bring attention to these and enables key decision-making. Initiates and drives critical programs through all phases of early drug discovery, measuring productivity and effectiveness, and supporting special projects and initiatives as needed. Ensures seamless collaboration across NIBR for advancing scientific projects.

- Creates, carries out, and implements processes to enable effective management of the global CBT portfolio including new initiatives, resource allocation, and risk management. Monitors, synthesizes, and reports on portfolio status, and proactively addresses and resolves issues. Develops improved project reporting tools to provide dynamic status updates. Supports leaders by managing and providing detailed portfolio analyses and data to enable management decision-making.

- Partners closely with the Portfolio co-chairs, steering committees and CBT Partners to enable the CBT Framework. Partners with the External Innovation Steering Committee, BD&L and AP&EI to ensure stage-appropriate decision-making of external activities in alignment with the strategy and deliverables. Cultivates matrix leadership across the department and beyond to enable Initiatives and cross-functional relationship building.

- Collaborates with Portfolio co-chairs to organize and execute inclusive portfolio governance, and coordination of CBT content for CBT, NIBR and NVS portfolio reviews. Active participant in cross-NIBR governance meetings, pivotal initiatives, and project or portfolio reviews. Represents CBT in the Portfolio Strategy Community and related Portfolio spaces.

- Strong portfolio connectivity and thought partnership with the Disease Areas, Functional Areas, and other strategic partners - enhance and evolve ongoing collaboration models. Drives initiatives with partner groups to create fully integrated implementation and execution of portfolio management.

- Enables cross-CBT connectivity through proactive portfolio and strategy communication to the broader community. Champion best-practice sharing exchange across project teams.

- Develops a diverse, inclusive, and highly skilled CBT talent pipeline by participating in recruiting activities and mentoring associates in their roles. Advances the departmental culture of learning to improve scientific and drug-hunting expertise among CBT associates at all levels. Directly leads, mentors, and develops the CBT Portfolio Team.

Minimum requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

- A BS/MS or PhD in the Life Sciences, with 5-10+ years' experience working in the biomedical field. Broad expertise in biology, technology, drug discovery and portfolio management is critical.

- High intrinsic motivation to develop novel therapeutics for patients.

- Competency in defining department strategy and effective execution/ operationalizing skills.

- Strong people leadership skills, including influencing and coaching skills, with demonstrated ability to successfully work in a highly matrixed environment.

- Demonstrates strong collaboration skills. Excellent oral and written communications skills.

- Experience effectively leading across organizational boundaries. Extensive experience leading large sophisticated teams.

- Strong Change Management Skills and ability to lead through ambiguity.

- Innovative, passionate, displays a strong and consistent sense of urgency with a strong focus on impact.

- Demonstrates high emotional intelligence and empathy to enable strong connectivity across the organization.

- Ability to travel.
