THE POSITION

The Forensic Autopsy Support Services Manager (Head, Forensic Autopsy Support Services) reports to the Chief, Forensic Medicine Division. The position is responsible for providing technical and administrative supervision, through subordinate supervisors, to forensic technician and ancillary staff providing autopsy assistance to the Department's forensic pathologists. Forensic Autopsy Support staff work alongside, and may receive technical direction from, forensic pathologists. As such, this position requires comprehensive/advanced knowledge of autopsy procedures; imaging equipment; photography techniques and procedures; policies and procedures related to safety and care of autopsy instruments and related equipment; rules related to evidence collection and preservation procedures; and the principles of supervision.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be someone with proven leadership skills and who has demonstrated supervisory experience in a forensic autopsy support position. The ideal candidate must also be able to effectively manage the day-to-day operations of the Forensic Autopsy Support Services Section and have a strong commitment to providing accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.

They must demonstrate integrity and practice sound management and decision making. Of particular importance will be the ability to maintain a team-oriented culture that is results-driven, transparent, and accountable.

Candidates should also be proactive, approachable, and effective in building a team of quality Forensic Autopsy support staff.

Strong professional/technical knowledge, supervisory and organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse staff are also a must for successful job performance.
Essential Job Functions
  • Oversees and monitors the daily operations of the Forensic Autopsy Support Division by supervising the planning, directing, scheduling, and coordinating of staff assigned to autopsy assistance assignments.
  • Maintains a uniform workflow by evaluating the workload, determining priorities, and shifting personnel to meet department needs.
  • Performs administrative personnel functions including evaluating employee performance, approving leaves of absence, counseling, and recommending discipline; participates in the interview and selection of subordinate staff; and determines training needs of staff and plans and/or conducts training.
  • Inspects the crypt, autopsy, photography, and imaging areas to ensure that health and safety standards are followed and enforced.
  • Supervises and participates in the training of staff in the proper techniques, procedures, and operations of photographic, imaging, and autopsy equipment.
  • Supervises and participates in the taking of fluoroscopies and dental and body x-rays for the purpose of identifying remains of deceased persons where no other method of identification is feasible, and of locating foreign objects lodged in the body or trauma leading to the possible cause of death.
  • Supervises and participates in the reconstruction of skeletal fragments of dental bite-wings, jaws, skulls, and other portions of the body as part of the identification process.
  • Supervises and may participate in taking photographs of decedents.
  • Oversees the supervision of and may participate in the most complex forensic procedures.
  • Ensures that all physical evidence found on decedents during autopsy is properly identified for collection and preservation for later forensic investigation.
  • Oversees the maintenance, documentation, transfer, and storage of all photographic and radiographic images for use by investigative agencies and the courts.
  • Monitors operating budget for Forensic Autopsy Support Services and prepares the annual budget request; recommends new or additional personnel and equipment, gathers statistical data, and writes justifications to support all requests.
  • Ensures inventory is maintained and replenished; supervises the requisition and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

OPTION I: Two (2) years of experience AS A Supervising Forensic Technician for Los Angeles County. OPTION II: Four (4) years of experience assisting pathologists in the performance of autopsies*, two years of which must have been supervising staff assisting in the performance of autopsies**.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

To qualify under OPTION I, applicants must have County status in this class, as evidenced by holding or having held such payroll title.

*Experience assisting pathologists in the performance of autopsies is defined as assisting with photography, x-ray, dissection, preparing and handling toxicology and histology specimens, setting up for autopsies, and preparing bodies to go back to refrigeration after autopsy. Experience with using a CT scanner is desirable.

**Experience supervising staff in the performance of autopsies is defined as assigning and reviewing work, conducting performance evaluations, preparing budgets and forecasting equipment needs, ordering equipment and supplies, ensuring employee safety, and quality assurance.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College coursework in Mortuary Science, Biology, Anatomy, Zoology or a closely related course of study from an accredited college or university.
  • An Associate's degree or higher in Mortuary Science, Biology, Anatomy, Zoology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Licensed Embalmer
  • Licensed Radiologic Technologist

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE:
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire to document specific education and work experience.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS: 3 - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Additional Information
OUR ASSESSMENT PROCESS:
Once we have determined that you meet the requirements, t his examination will consist of three (3) parts:

Part I: A multiple choice test, weighted 50%, measuring the following areas: Deductive Reasoning, Management Judgment, Management Potential, Willingness to Learn, Demonstrating Empathy, Working Relationships, Sharing Knowledge and Guidance, Analyzing Information, Learning Quickly, Generating New Ideas, Using Time Efficiently, Working to High Quality Standards, Adapting to Change, Controlling Emotions, Achievement, and Responsibility .

Applicants must meet the Minimum Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on PART I in order for their evaluation of Training & Experience (PART II) to be calculated and scored.
Part II: An evaluation of Training & Experience, weighted 35%, measuring the following areas: Professional/technical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology/concepts, uses of autopsy and forensic-related equipment, health and safety practices and procedures, state laws and guidelines as applied to the operation of a medico-legal facility, technology application, and industry learning, based on information from the supplemental questionnaire in the application.
Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the evaluation of Training & Experience (PART II) in order to be invited to the writing assessment (PART III).
PART III: A writing assessment, weighted 15%, measuring the following areas: English structure and content, written expression, and prioritizing information.

  • This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test scores may be transferred.
