What You Will Do
The Deputy Group Leader of the Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group (T-6) is a member of the Theoretical Division's leadership team, and will partner with the T-6 Group Leader in providing technical leadership and management to the group. Technical areas of focus in the group include phylogenetic and evolutionary analysis, modeling of biomolecular function and biological physics, and epidemiology and disease progression modeling. The Deputy Group Leader (DGL) will report to the Group Leader and will assist and complement the Group Leader in ensuring an environment suitable to conduct world class science, providing sound fiscal management, stimulating program development activities, personnel development at all career stages, and performing administrative tasks. The position is funded at 50% with the expectation that for the other 50%, the successful candidate will conduct funded research activities that are in alignment with the capabilities and direction of the group.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated scientific accomplishment and expertise in one or more technical areas of the group.
  • A record of successfully recruiting, mentoring, and retaining excellent students and post-docs
  • Experience effectively managing financial and human resources with commitment to diversity and inclusion, staff career development, and mentorship of junior staff.
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written, technical and non-technical), including the ability to effectively communicate with staff and management across multiple levels and organizations, as well as resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to obtain or maintain a Q-clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship .

Education/Experience: A Ph.D. in bioinformatics, mathematics, statistics, physics, biophysics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of DoD, NIH, DoE, and/or other internal and external programs of relevance to the Theoretical Division and the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Simulation and Computation (ALDSC).
  • Demonstrated success in leadership of R&D project or team culminating in technical products, diverse and successful teams, or actionable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated success in proposing, developing, and sustaining research programs that attract support from the NIH, DoD, LDRD, or private industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in building collaborative relationships across organizations and/or institutions.
  • Experience with administrative, personnel, budget, and/or programmatic business systems and procedures.

Location : This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
