The Infectious Diseases Discovery group at Janssen Research & Development, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Associate Scientific Director to join the antibacterials team to contribute to our efforts to discover and develop new bacteriophage based therapies. You will collaborate with a diverse group of scientists to lead discovery biology aimed at identifying, validating novel and develop novel bacteriophage treatments.
The successful candidate will work as part of the phage microbiology team to contribute to the scientific advancement of the portfolio. He/she will effectively communicate data and results to our stakeholders within and outside of J&J and work effectively with colleagues in across J&J sectors. The scientific supervision, mentoring and management of scientists will be part of daily activities. He/she will be responsible achieving pipeline objectives and determine appropriate resources within timeline and budgetary constraints. He/she may take responsibility for personnel management, including but not limited to performance appraisals and talent development plans.
The candidate will have a strong background in bacteriophage biology and broad and in-depth understanding of bacteriophage drug discovery and early stage development.

In This Exciting Role, You Will
- Provide infectious disease scientific leadership and direct contribution for bacteriophage drug project teams to optimize candidates
- Establish new tools, assays, and relevant disease models
- Manage in matrix and or directly a team of high performing scientists as part of a dynamic and interactive infectious disease discovery group
- Support evaluation of external licensing opportunities
- Work with Research and Clinical Development projects teams to support therapeutic goals
- Independently manage external collaborations with academic and industry partners
- Design and execute decisional experiments
- Contribute to scientific literature and conferences through publication and presentation of results
- Ph.D. degree with at least 7 years of relevant experience is required
- Demonstrated expertise in bacteriophage biology and drug discovery is required
- Broad and in-depth understanding of drug discovery and early stage development is required
- Independent, self-motivated and innovative and the ability to excel in a goal-oriented, multifaceted and fast-paced environment is required.
- Experience leading and managing scientists as a team or cross functionally is preferred
- Strong organizational skills are required
- Proven capability of working in cross-functional R&D teams is required
- Proven project leadership in biologic drug discovery programs preferred
- Experience in authoring preclinical sections for regulatory submissions is required
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and high quality oral presentation skills are required
- Strong publication record is required
- Excellent team spirit and interpersonal skills are required
- This position is located in Spring House, PA, and will require approximately 10% travel, both domestic and international.
