Overview:

The Crop Physiology Laboratory at Utah State University has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with background in controlled environment Cannabis physiology and production. .

Incumbents in the Postdoctoral Fellow position are provided the opportunity for advanced academic preparation and research training often under the guidance of a supervising faculty mentor. Postdoctoral appointments are temporary by nature and are designed to develop the postdoctoral scholar as an independent researcher and to enhance their professional skills in academia. Positions are typically subject to the availability of funds.

The position is available immediately.

Responsibilities:

Conduct controlled environment research in collaboration with a team.

Design studies, summarize results publish in referred journals.

Maintain a sold publication record.

Work well in a collaborative, inter-disciplinary environment.

Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Horticulture, Plant Science, or related discipline

A background in plant physiology, photobiology, nutrition, and/or controlled environment crop production

Excellent written, oral communication, and collaboration skills

Demonstrated ability to publish in refereed journals

Independently plan and conduct research

Data analysis and presentation of research findings at professional meetings

Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals

Ability to help supervise undergraduate employees and graduate students

Useful areas of Experience: Experience in photosynthetic gas exchange and automated data acquisition

USU Crop Physiology Laboratory

The CPL specializes in the use of controlled environments to examine whole-plant physiological responses to the environment. We primarily study crop plants, but our research has evolved to include optimizing the nutrition of algae for biofuels, using trees and wetland plants to clean up contaminated soils (phytoremediation), and selecting turf grass varieties that are both heat- and drought-tolerant.

Our plants are often grown under electric lamps and in hydroponic culture - so they never see the sun and never touch soil. These conditions allow us to conduct detailed studies on genetic responses to environmental conditions. We routinely grow plants in relatively small, sealed chambers so that we can measure the fluxes of water vapor in transpiration, and CO2 in photosynthesis and respiration. We are proud to have been funded by NASA for over 20 years to study the challenges associated with growing food crops in bioregenerative life support systems in space.

The Crop Physiology Laboratory is also involved with research on the optimization, understanding, and application of techniques and principles related to the growth of crops in the genus Cannabis.
