The Environmental Engineer position is directly responsible for ensuring the Gurnee, IL site achieves and maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, Local and Corporate environmental regulations, and programs. The position has primary responsibility for facility compliance programs in air, water, waste, spill prevention and other environmental aspects relevant to the site. This position also supports the environmental compliance needs for small facilities in the US, including coordinating third party support as needed. The incumbent will be responsible for identifying potential risks to the company, championing measures to prevent occurrence, and establishing corrective measures to prevent re-occurrence. The related activities are to be done in a manner that supports overall business goals (production plans, etc.), and completed with minimal direction from management. This position has frequent contact with regulatory agencies and appropriate industry and community groups.

Responsibilities

* Prepares regulatory reports including preparation and organization of backup data (e.g., ACC, SAMR, AER, TRI)
* Tracks permit conditions and prepares applications for new permits
* Tracks new regulations and assesses their impact on the site
* Participates in government inspections
* Conducts regulatory training
* Conducts site inspections
* Lead incident investigations
* Organizes the sites solid waste program and operates it in a cost-effective manner
* Manages the hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs
* Assists in compliance monitoring for the Title V air permit, especially HAP emissions
* Reviews capital projects for environmental compliance
* Teams with other departments on site to actively supports company objectives and programs
* Serves on site committees, project teams, and, if applicable, community and civic projects
* Ensure proper completion of environmental compliance tasks performed by others
* Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThird parties as needed.

Qualifications

* BS in engineering, chemistry, biology, industrial hygiene, environmental or related field and/or a minimum of 5 years experience in manufacturing operations with a broad-based knowledge of environmental science.
* Technical knowledge of chemical plant operations, to allow proper interpretation and application of environmental protection standards.
* A strong understanding of environmental regulations as they relate to a batch chemical manufacturing facility.
* A thorough and practical knowledge of emergency response functions as they apply to chemical plants.
* Ability to conduct frequent and effective training for all employees in all aspects of environmental protection.
* Strong team and interpersonal skills required to work and communicate effectively across site groups (management through workforce) and regional sites.
* Good computer and record keeping skills to accumulate and organize/present results.
* Good communication skills, both written and oral.
* Ability to use a wide variety of standard office equipment as well as a personal computer; must be proficient in MS Office Suite applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.).
* Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language and correct spelling, punctuation and grammatical usage and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
* Knowledge of human behavior and performance and ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints and to deal with regulatory agency issues and information.

Desired :

* Licensing or Certification Requirements: PE a plus
* Experience managing site compliance under a Title-V permit strongly preferred.
* Safety & Health experience (or ASP / CSP) also a plus.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, incumbent is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; frequently required to stand and walk; must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Able to speak clearly and hear well via telephone. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus and to work on a computer much of the day.

Work Environment: Fluctuating plant/office environment. Requires flexible individual with ability to handle stressful situations and often intense work pace.
