Director of Programs

Established in 1970, the International Peace Institute (IPI) is an independent, international not-for-profit think tank dedicated to managing risk and building resilience to promote peace, security, and sustainable development. IPI undertakes a mix of policy research, strategic analysis, publishing, and convening. With a professional staff drawn from more than 20 countries and a broad range of academic fields, IPI's main office is in New York facing the UN's headquarters.

This position reports directly to IPI's Vice President and has overall responsibility for developing and managing IPI's Programs agenda. This entails responsibility for developing projects ideas, responding to research requests of donors and other constituencies, overall quality control of research outputs, managing research staff, and fundraising. The ideal candidate will have exceptional written and oral communication skills; an accomplished record of published research focused on international peace and security, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of multilateral affairs; be able to articulate the connections between international security and other global agendas, such as development, public health, and climate change; and have first-hand field experience with the United Nations system or other multilateral organization in a crisis, conflict, post-conflict environment. The candidate should also demonstrate strong management skills. The individual should have a global network of contacts in multilateral affairs. The Director of Programs will be a member of the IPI management team and work in collaboration with its members.

Responsibilities

· Participate in the development of IPI's strategic agenda, the design, development, and implementation of all programs.

· Guide the direction of IPI's research agenda in consultation with the Vice President, particularly related to peace, security, and conflict management tools, including conflict analysis, prevention, mediation, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and humanitarian action.

· Lead IPI's work on UN peace operations policy and practice, maintaining institutional knowledge on current developments and long-term trends in the field.

· Ensure continuous flow of information and coordination among the programs and between the management team and program staff.

· Conduct research, draft written products, conceptualize and chair meetings, and other substantive activities related to research programs and events.

· Supervise overall quality control of IPI's research products in collaboration with program leads and IPI's editor.

· Supervise, in coordination with other members of the management team, the work of all program staff (full-time and part-time) and project consultants.

· Manage and provide research guidance to junior staff.

· Manage the recruitment of program staff and consultants, as well as support the recruitment of other staff, as needed.

· Support IPI's President, Vice President, and management team in outreach and fundraising efforts.

Other Duties

· Additional responsibilities to be determined by IPI's evolving priorities, as assigned by the President and Vice President.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

· A master's degree or PhD in international relations, political science, global public policy, or related field;

· A minimum of 10 years of experience in an international/regional organization, government, research organization or non-governmental organization working on conflict analysis and prevention, peace operations, humanitarian affairs and/or peacebuilding;

· A solid research background with a focus on peace operations, conflict dynamics, peacebuilding and multilateral institutions;

· Proven excellence in writing, editing, and communication; Knowledge of and strong networks within UN institutions and policymaking, as well as of the broader think-tank/policy development system globally; operations;

· Ability to work independently, with attention to detail and without constant supervision;

· Demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet deadlines;

· Experience with fundraising and project management; and

· Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills and fluency in English.

The following qualifications are highly preferred:

· First-hand field experience with the United Nations system or other multilateral organization in a crisis, conflict, post-conflict environment.

· Proficiency in French or other official UN language.
