A post-doctoral Research Associate position is available in the Hirsh Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia. The successful candidate will be a motivated and creative individual to investigate molecular and behavioral responses to dopamine deficiency in fruit fly and mouse models. The research associate will engage in cutting edge research to identify genetic pathways that aid in compensation for dopamine loss in models relevant to the delayed pathogenesis in early human Parkinson's Disease.
The research associate will identify transcriptome changes in isolated dopamine neurons in response to in vivo lack of dopamine and will then have the ability meld the Drosophila data with comparable data from mouse, and to test the functional relevance of these changes. The research associate will receive training in Drosophila genetics and neurogenetics if necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a PhD degree in Biology or a related discipline is required at time of appointment. Published expertise in at least one of the following areas is required: model organism development or neuroscience, RNA SEQ transcriptome studies, and/or single cell sequencing techniques. The project requires strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills as the candidate is expected to play a prominent role in the laboratory as a mentor for both graduate and undergraduate students.
