Job Description

The Desert Research Institute is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellow in Applied and Ecological Climatology. The position will support applied and user-inspired research, applications development, and science delivery within the Western Regional Climate Center. The WRCC is an interdisciplinary research group with expertise in physical and social climate science, science translation, wildfire science, climate data and climate services. Our research team aims to build regional capacity for climate adaptation and climate services with an emphasis on working collaboratively with public and private agencies and organizations to develop decision support research to address climate-related hazards and management issues.

The research focus of this position will be to examine the connections between drought, wildfire, and fuels. Responsibilities include applied/user-inspired research, proposal, paper, and report preparation; close interaction with fire and land management agencies; collaboration with federal, academic and international physical and social scientists. A combination of technical and interpersonal communication skills is required. On the ground fire experience is important to understand agency actions, activities and policies, research to operations, and science delivery.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Climatology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, or related interdisciplinary field from an accredited institution with an emphasis on climate and ecological interactions.
  • Strong knowledge and background in drought, physical fire science, or plant physiology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ecological climatology.
  • Quantitative analysis skills (e.g., Python, R).
  • Ability to work independently and develop research proposals.
  • Ability to effectively analyze and report research findings to sponsors, at conferences, and in the scientific literature (clear written and spoken English).

Preferred Qualifications

Greater consideration will be given to those who possess the following skills and attributes:
  • Field work experience.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods.
  • Ability to interact with various levels within wildland fire management agencies.
  • On the ground fire experience with US federal or state fire management agencies, or private/NGO partners (e.g., The Nature Conservancy).
  • Knowledge of fuels and/or fire behavior modeling and management.
  • Knowledge of fire in ecosystems.

Conditions of Employment
  • Some travel expected for meetings, workshops, and conferences.

Compensation/Benefits

Starting salary is commensurate with experience and education. DRI offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, 6.2% retirement match, 1.25 annual leave days per month, a beginning balance of 15 sick leave days, 11 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the option to participate in a flexible spending account or health savings account. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance, dependent on division funding.
