Our startup biotechnology company that is well funded and growing quickly has tasked Scientific Search in finding them a Computational Biologist who will specialize in skin biology.

Responsibilities

* Architect our client's computational strategic vision and collaborate with internal and external parties to execute on the strategic vision
* Provide technical expertise toward the design and execution of biotech programs
* Summarize and display complex data into actionable metrics to inform experimental design/next steps
* Create and troubleshoot (custom) software in order to enable high throughput analysis pipelines
* Analyze varied genomic data sets (transcriptomics, resequencing, genome assembly, genome annotation, metagenomics, epigenetics, etc.)
* Develop tools for manipulation and analysis of NGS datasets. Perform comparative and phylogenetic analysis of genome and metagenome sequence data
* Run software and scripts while keeping excellent records
* Analyze large metagenomic datasets (microbiome data sets)
* Stay current on scientific literature (new methods, data analysis tools, etc) and cutting-edge technology
* Collaborate with internal team and work closely with the team's Head of Biotechnology
* Design, execute, review, and interpret experiments to provide recommendations towards product development strategies
* Communicate technical information to internal teams and/or external parties in the form of oral and written correspondence, presentations, and reports
* Develop technical insights based on research and scientific literature
* Work with cross-functional teams to implement new technologies into new product development pipelines
* Do "whatever it takes" to get the job done and work effectively and efficiently including on a tight deadline without drama or ego. We are a dynamic startup whose priorities may need to shift.

Requirements

* MS/PhD in life sciences, bioinformatics, computational biology, physical sciences, or equivalent experience4+ years of experience in computational biology and/or data analysis, including at least 2 years of hands-on work experience with real data (either in an academic or industry environment)
* Demonstrated strong skills in computational biology
* Proven technical skills in problem solving, analytical techniques, data gathering, analysis, statistics, interpretation, and proficiency in method and instrument troubleshooting
* Must have experience with analyzing microbiome data sets
* High level experience with DNA and RNA sequencing
* Loves to write elegant code (please provide a link to any publicly available code when applying)
* Experience with many or all of the following: Python, bash/unix scripting, samtools, bwa, snakemake, airflow, CWL, relational databases (SQL), GraphQL, distributed computing (AWS/Google Cloud), Docker, software version control (git)
* Experience with manipulation and visualization of genome, metagenome, and/or NGS datasets
* Experience with data mining
* Experience with NGS data from Illumina and MinIon sequencing machines, (de novo) genome and hybrid assembly, and genome annotation is a plus
* Experience in research on host-microbiome interactions is a plus
* Knowledge of human skin biology and immunology is a plus
* Experience with systems biology and metabolic modeling is a plus
