Task 1: Water Safety Outreach
SCA Interns are tasked with promoting water and recreational safety at USACE and partner agency managed parks, swim beaches, day use areas, campgrounds, and boat ramps. This responsibility includes all aspects of recreational safety, including but not limited to water‐based recreation such as swimming and boating; bicycling, hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. The primary focus is on water and boating safety for all ages with an emphasis on 20‐60 year old males. Assignments may include interacting with and educating visitors through face‐to‐face contact at park facilities, reporting as required by the USACE staff, developing outreach mechanisms, especially for the 20‐60 year old male target audience, updating bulletin boards, maintaining life jacket stations, organizing safety‐related events, conducting interpretive programs and roving interpretation, writing news releases, conducting
media interviews to promote the USACE safety campaigns, developing public service announcements, drafting social media announcements, and documenting efforts with quality photographs. Interns may also be used for search and rescue efforts and as a second safety person for boat patrols made by USACE Park Rangers.

Task 2: Environmental Education
SCA Interns are tasked with assisting USACE Park Rangers and/or independently leading environmental educational (EE) interpretive programs to the visiting public. Conduct visitor center operations and tours. Additional responsibilities may include preparing EE programs by utilizing existing resources, developing new EE programs, improve existing programs independently and by incorporating suggestions gathered during contact with park visitors, identifying new EE program visual aids, and
developing new and/or improving existing park brochures, wildlife checklists, bulletin board posters, and interpretive panels.

Task 3: Natural Resource and Recreation Management
SCA Interns are tasked with making continual efforts to keep USACE and partner agency managed parks and wildlife areas safe for outdoor recreation and for the visiting public, as well as, assisting park rangers, wildlife biologist and other USACE employees by performing routine tasks pertinent to the project's environmental stewardship/recreation management and public safety program.

Task 4: Responsibility
Oral instructions for accomplishing and completing work assignments are given by supervisor or higher graded employee. Receives direct supervision for special assignments and specific time frames for accomplishment. Obtains assistance or uses appropriate equipment or safety devices when lifting and moving very heavy objects. The supervisor checks work on a random basis for timeliness, work practices,
and compliance with instructions.

**It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
