Bowhead is seeking a Scientist/Engineer to join our team in Vicksburg, MS to support our US Army Corps of Engineers customer at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) for a recently awarded Environmental Lab contract. The ERDC Environmental Lab contract is tasked with satisfying Army and Department of Defense (DoD) requirements which may include: analysis of baseline (i.e., reference) wetland conditions as well as wetland functional status in disturbed, altered, restored, or created environments. In particular, studies focused on the performance and trajectory of restored/created environments are of interest including the cycling of nutrients, elements, and other compounds within wetland systems. This non-severable task will include the preparation, laboratory analysis, and reporting of the results from a two-year field and lab study (24 months) to research the use of phosphorus optimal wetlands in the Great Lakes watershed.

The Scientist will be responsible for conducting mesocosm greenhouse studies and executing data collection protocols; performing serial (timed) data measurements including soil and water chemistry (pH, temperature, pore water sampling and analysis, soil physicochemical properties); operate monitoring equipment (YSI, pressure loggers, pH, redox); perform soil extractions and incubations; auto analyzer and nutrient analysis; calculations and data management; preparing chemical reagents; general laboratory cleaning protocols; and other general tasks related to the ongoing operation and maintenance of a laboratory (sample preparation, processing).

Essential functions will include:

• Using data obtained in the pilot study, will be responsible for developing and implementing a full-scale study to assess the effects of reduced floodplain inundation on benthic assemblages at multiple Gulf sturgeon feeding habitats
• Preparing written report(s) that include the results of all statistical analysis
• Performing a variety of laboratory and field procedures using established synthetic methods and techniques as well as conducting experiments and collecting field samples.
• Conducting and interpreting routine data as well as collecting a variety of samples
• Developing testing procedures; and directing activities of other contractors in the laboratory while maintaining accurate and complete files
• Recording test data and preparing reports, summaries, and charts that interpret test results

Travel Requirement: Travel to assist with collection of field samples and to attend stakeholder meetings in the Buffalo District Great Lakes Research Initiative (GLRI) in Ohio (i.e., Defiance, Ohio, and St Mary locations) and other wetlands in the regions; regional travel may include day trips or travel up to 5-days. Estimating a total for 8 trips will be required for this task.

• Associates Degree and two to five (2-5+) years of experience in a related field or related area, or a combination of education and experience.
• Must have knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures as related to biological and environmental studies
• Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts
• Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a clearance at the Public Trust level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
