This position is part of a well-established mutli-crop team that manages two comprehensive maize breeding programs along with testing locations for wheat and sorghum to meet the quality, quantity and timeline targets for project deliverables. The successful candidate will have knowledge of plant biology and genetics, be comfortable with agricultural equipment, irrigation systems operations, computers, electronic devices, and be interested in working both indoors and in the field. They will be expected to apply knowledge of plant biology and agronomy to interpret genotypic and phenotypic observations to help drive product advancement. They need a positive, collaborative attitude, good communication and critical thinking skills, and a knack for creative problem solving. This position involves supervising Research Associate/Assistants and coordinating activities with other groups and teams.

Responsibilities:

* Manage day-to-day activities as part of a team, working collaboratively to meet the quality, quantity, and timeline targets for project deliverables. This may include experiment planning, location mapping, plot planting, plant tagging and sampling, soil sampling and nutrient planning, irrigating, fertilizing, pollinating, mechanical and/or hand harvesting, and inventory activities such as discarding, shelling, and packaging resulting seed.
* Manage the care of plants in an agricultural field setting, including irrigation, plant nutrition, and pest-management
* Manage the maintenance and inventory of the local corn breeding programs
* Collect phenotypic trait data across all crops in Garden City testing network
* Coordinate with other groups to ensure key steps are completed in a timely and collaborative manner
* Communicate openly with team and supervisors on matters of relevance
* Promote positive work attitudes
* Supervise full-time employees and contingent workers, ensuring work is performed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with protocols and regulations
* Willing and able to work flexible schedules, weekends during peak periods when required
* Support all Garden City Research center-wide goals and support other projects when needed
* Determine how to conduct experiments to meet researchers needs within allotted time constraints.
* Identify appropriate uses of company resources when conducting experiments.
* Determination of data quality, as a result of environmental occurrences.
* Determine when meaningful data can be collected from field experiments (e.g., differentiating levels of a disease infection).
* Identify equipment to be repaired and/or replaced

Qualifications

Requirements:

What expertise have you grown? What do you bring to the table?

* Master's degree in biology, botany, plant breeding, agriculture, or related plant science field
* Two to four years related experience
* Alternatively, equivalent levels of relevant education and experience
* Experience in operating irrigation systems
* Ability to operate forklift and other agricultural equipment
* Willing and able to be a pesticide handler
* Ability to manage people
* Ability to work as part of a larger, culturally diverse group, as well as independently when needed
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Knowledgeable in plant biology and agronomy
* Organization and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities
* Ability to bend, reach, and lift repetitively. Occasionally required to carry up to 50 lbs
* Tolerance, willingness, and ability to work in warm conditions and variable environments
* Computer competency and experience with MS Office- Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
* Valid driver's license
