Your Role:

The EHS&S Compliance Specialist executes Environmental, Health, Safety & Security support services under the direction of the Head of EHS for the Carlsbad Viral Vector Manufacturing site including but not limited to EHS training, compliance program completion and related filings, permit filing, OSHA reporting and filing, site auditing, deviation responses, recordkeeping, root cause investigations and risk assessments; and development/adherence to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

Essential Functions:
  • Assist in meeting new or revised EHS requirements as defined by the Head of EHS
  • Assist in the collection of data to support all required OSHA and environmental reports
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with ISO14001 and ISO45001 Certification
  • Maintain and drive safety culture throughout site
  • Support EHS systems and ensure appropriate behaviors
  • Inform management of EHS deviations
  • Properly escalate risks with respect to people, products, and processes
  • Ensure standard and consistent EHS methods are utilized
  • Provide EHS support to Manufacturing, Distribution, and Engineering/Maintenance for products that require design for development to ensure EHS aspects are incorporated
  • Support EHS programs in conjunction with Operations, Distribution, and other site functions, EHS compliance programs and appropriate agency filings
  • Address and resolve EHS related issues
  • Collaborate with impacted groups to ensure timely project completion related to EHS aspects
  • Collaborate with site personnel to ensure a safe work environment
  • Prompt interaction with Plant Management and HR to address EHS related employee issues, Support BeSafe observations program
  • Interpreting EHS audit results and timely completion of corrective actions
  • Conduct appropriate EHS audits
  • EHS project completion
  • Develop new EHS concepts, techniques and standards
  • Ensure alignment of EHS solutions with organizational objectives
  • Implement workplace injury/illness prevention programs which includes health and safety procedures, incident investigation, and training
  • Participate/Lead Employee EHS Committee(s) and site management team
  • Develop and implement EHS training for all employees
  • Participate in activities associate with job hazard analysis, industrial hygiene monitoring, hazardous waste identification, collection and disposal, wastewater treatment, spill control and emergency planning, contractor safety, and safety engineering reviews
  • Conduct root cause investigations, conduct risk assessments
  • Support the Security Manager with physical security initiatives and standards in compliance with Corporate Physical Security policies, directives, programs, standards, guidelines and regulatory agencies (FDA, EMEA, DEA, TSA….)
  • Maintain and improve current facility physical security by analyzing corporate, industrial, and political trends to assess significant emerging risks and offer solutions in anticipation of both current and future business requirements.
  • Conduct physical security vulnerability assessments/audits and recommend improvements, to include short term and long-term funding requirements. Performs formal and informal risk and threat assessments; research and implement appropriate technology to address site risks and vulnerabilities.

Who you are:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4+ years' experience in an EHS role in a manufacturing environment
  • 2+ years' experience with ISO14001, environmental regulations, chemical safety, ergonomics, fall protection, respiratory protection, lab safety, DOT and IATA regulations, Bloodborne Pathogens, behavior-based safety programs, and lab safety practices


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, or related discipline
  • Six Sigma Blue Belt certification (or higher) or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma methodologies
  • Strong computer skills
  • Superior organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects
  • Ability to develop solutions to complex problems with ingenuity and innovation
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization and with outside contacts
  • Ability to conduct Job Hazard Analyses and manage corrective actions
  • Ability to complete environmental permitting requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization and with outside contacts
  • Ability to be discreet in handling confidential and sensitive matters is essential.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
  • Proficient, knowledgeable and experienced with security technologies and integration (CCTV, Access Control, Alarm Systems, Photo ID systems, Mass Notification and Incident Management).
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical and/or packaging setting with cGMP knowledge
