Job Description

Wood Mackenzie owns and operates a growing international network of 5000+ sensors collecting real-time data on commodity sectors: energy, metals/mining, shipping, and manufacturing. Wood Mackenzies proprietary monitoring systems measure millions of data points per day.

The Research Scientist will work with Woodmacs sensor network operations team, applying their knowledge to advance sensor hardware and software with their expertise in physics. This candidate will research and advise on electromagnetic fields related to power transmission lines, thermal/infrared light spectrums, and more. In addition, they will assist data and quality control analysts with manipulating data into new valuable information and provide support/guidance related to hardware and software development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research and provide expertise on physical signals, such as sensing different wavelengths: emf, thermal/infrared light spectrums, and more.
  • Develop models in suitable mathematical languages.
  • Work closely with data analysts to convert research on forces, structures, and phenomena into actionable information.
  • Work closely with software development teams around sensor software and hard science math.
  • Planning and conducting field experiments; often coordinating with the field operations team.
Qualifications
  • MS Physics
  • 3+ years relevant work
  • Robust Python or suitable scripting languages
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic fields.
  • Applied physics modeling experience; synthesizing simulated physics model data and hardware-measured data is critical to success in this role.
  • Prior experience with IoT sensors, remote sensing hardware, and industry focus on utilities, oil, gas, or power spaces is a big plus.
