Role Summary

Algen is seeking a Scientist / Senior Scientist with a track record of rigorous scientific discovery, someone who has played vital roles in successful projects and builds strong teams. The Scientist / Senior Scientist will have responsibility for four critical areas: establish and lead our molecular biology team; serve as a key member of Algen's multi-disciplinary discovery team focused on the development of new approaches to target and drug discovery, manage industry collaborations and address operational business needs as we grow.

We are seeking a Scientist / Senior Scientist with exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong project management skills. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who excels at defining relevant scientific discovery projects, provides clear direction to others and manages work to timely and successful completion. The Senior Scientist needs to be flexible and creative, someone who can adapt project direction or methods as information evolves. This individual must be great at partnering with others, an effective collaborator with co-workers and external stakeholders. Additionally, we are looking for a Senior Scientist who gives compelling presentations and enjoys making complex information meaningful for a variety of stakeholders. As we grow, everyone's responsibilities will evolve. It will be important for this person to be motivated to lead breakthrough scientific discovery as well as help build a successful company. This role calls for someone willing to dive deep in their area of expertise, continuously learn from and collaborate with others and who is willing to wear the many hats required to build a successful company.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and lead the biology team responsible for developing and/or applying functional genomics assays
  • Effectively partner with colleagues from different disciplines; contribute meaningful insights, and co-create solutions in a fast-paced team setting
  • Apply new approaches to genetically engineered cells, utilize new areas of biology to understand human disease process
  • Build high volume and defined data sets, co-create a data architecture to enable a multi-disciplinary team to interpret biological processes; make meaningful and accurate interpretations from the data; engage colleagues from other disciplines in developing interpretations
  • Model biological processes, interpret and co-create concepts and constructs in partnership with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Develop and deliver engaging presentations for technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Write grants and scientific proposals


Required Qualifications & Experience
  • PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology or a related field with 1-2 years of experience, industry preferred (Scientist), or 3-5 years of industry experience (Sr. Scientist)
  • Experience in functional genomics assays on a large and/or whole genome scale using viral transduction, CRISPR and/or RNAi
  • Expertise in mammalian cell culture
  • Demonstrated ability to construct and analyze complex data sets
  • Track record of scientific writing and presentations
  • Outstanding communication skills, written and verbal
  • Experienced presenter, has developed and delivered engaging presentations of complex information for technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Exceptional teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Desire to solve and/or oversee issues/projects outside of core responsibilities as the company grows


Additional Preferred Experience
  • Previously designed studies using single cell technologies
  • Publications in premier conferences or journals are highly encouraged
  • Experience with grant and/or project proposal writing
