PAUL SMITH'S COLLEGE
Disaster Management & Response Assistant/Associate Professor
Paul Smith's College is a small, private baccalaureate and associate degree granting institution located on a 170-acre campus adjacent to Lower St. Regis Lake in the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park of northern New York State. In addition, the College owns 14,000 acres of adjacent lands composed of forest and lakes. The College is committed to providing all students with an outstanding undergraduate experience through engaged teaching, experiential learning, and personal attention. Five departments, including the Forestry Department, prepare over 700 full-time students for innovative careers. Academic programs within the Forestry Department provide an extensive "hands-on" laboratory and field experience. In addition to traditional forestry programs, the Forestry Department also houses one of the College's fastest growing programs, Disaster Management & Response, as well as a minor in Wildland Firefighting.
Job Description:
The Forestry Department at Paul Smith's College invites applicants for a full-time faculty appointment, starting in the spring of 2022 (with fall '22 start option) to help support our growing Disaster Management & Response program. This position (Assistant/Associate Professor of Disaster Management & Response) has a primary focus teaching course in disaster operation & recovery, wildland firefighting, search and rescue, and sustainable community disaster planning (including use of GIS). The position is a full-time/nine-month appointment. Other expectations may include research or outreach that addresses regional disaster management issues and involves student participation and advising student clubs associated with the academic program. Initial rank will depend on qualifications.
Minimum qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position will have training and practical, real-world experience in disaster management & response, a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level where faculty provide personal guidance to undergraduate students, the capacity to teach a variety of courses, demonstrable research/outreach interests in disaster management, and demonstrated record of professional involvement with his/her community. Therefore, candidates for these positions must have (1) a Master's degree or equivalent professional certifications, (2) documentation of effectively providing personalized, experiential teaching, and (3) a record of productive research and/or outreach and professional development.
Preferred qualifications:
Candidates with a terminal degree in a disaster response field will be given higher consideration. Paul Smith's College particularly seeks candidates who have experience teaching at a small college and have successfully delivered introductory and advanced courses in disaster management that meet the needs of students with a range of academic abilities both in the major and in other majors such as forestry, sustainability, or general natural resource management. Certification in high-angle rope rescue and swift water rescue is a plus. Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in facilitating career success of students through developmental advising and involvement in student chapters of professional societies.
To Apply:
Applicants should complete the on-line application and submit a letter of intent, resume, and contact information for three professional references. It is the policy of Paul Smith's College to provide equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, genetic information, or any other protected characteristic under applicable law.
