Description:

Implements and monitors Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs. Ensures compliance with policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Will administer and oversee institutional implementation of the Laboratory Research Safety Program.

Will ensure Chemical Hygiene Plan meets relevant OSHA regulatory requirements, including information to prevent or minimize lab-related injuries and illnesses, to protect the quality of the workplace, and to protect the surrounding environment.

Will be the lead contact for any regulatory inspections concerning safety related concern with research related activities such as biohazardous materials.

Will coordinate the USDA permits program, waste program and the autoclave program.

Provides leadership and technical research safety expertise for Emory University as needed.

Will assist the Director of Research Safety on oversight of Biosafety and Chemical safety protocol process.

In coordination with program manager, develops and conducts training programs.

May hire, supervise and evaluate staff.

Performs related responsibilities as required.

Emory training this position require within the employee's first month of employment:

Research Lab Safety, Radiation Safety, Blood borne pathogen, Biosafety, Respiratory protection, Shipping training, Herpes B

Additional Emory training this position require within the employee's first six months of employment:

Chemical Hygiene, Principles and Practices in BioSafety, Lab Safety

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors plus 5 years experience in environmental engineering, public health, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related field of study (i.e. chemistry) is required.

Professional Board Certification desired. Examples include: CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), CHP (Certified Health Physicist), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), BSP (Biosafety Professional), CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), PE (Professional Engineer), etc. Equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
