Position Summary: This position serves as the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Director for the University. The EHS Director ensures that the University complies with all federal, state, and local regulations involving environmental, health and safety issues. In addition, this position provides a conduit for technical and regulatory support, communication, training and knowledge. The EHS Director supervises the Occupational Health & Safety Manager.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
* Develop, maintain and coordinate the college environmental health and safety programs to ensure compliance with relevant local, state and federal laws and regulations. Update programs, policies and procedures as laws/ regulations change. Prepare, maintain and file required reports.
* Provide the strategic leadership in Environmental Health and Safety in accordance with the college Strategic Plan. An important aspect of meeting this responsibility is to effectively and consistently coordinate and communicate with University Administrators, Research representatives, Faculty, Deans, Chief Risk Management Officer, and Associate Vice Presidents across campus.
* Monitor compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including, but not limited to, worker health and safety, environmental, laboratory management. Prepare plans and ensure implementation to comply with all WISHA, OSHA, Labor & Industry, Department of Ecology, Fire Marshal, Health Department, and other local, state and federal agency regulations.
* Prepare all annual reports required by local, state, and federal agencies regarding environmental, and employee health and safety.
* Develop safety-training programs/courses. Ensure training for all staff including faculty and student staff on work place safety in an ongoing effort to prevent work place accidents.
* Cite deficiencies in, enforce, and monitor compliance with safety programs.
* Coordinate and respond to federal, state and local inspectors including the timely response to safety violation citations.
* Monitor the purchase, use, documentation, and disposal of chemicals.
* Coordinate the campus hazardous waste disposal program. Provide related information to the community regarding proper disposal procedures; supervise the removal of hazardous waste; maintain hazardous waste inventories, and ensure hazardous waste disposal complies with local, state and federal regulations.
* Maintain the asbestos compliance program. Identify and label all materials containing asbestos, and conduct inspections to identify asbestos and oversee the abatement or removal of the asbestos.
* Perform periodic inspections of facilities and operations to identify and evaluate risk factors. Submit recommendations designed to eliminate or maintain optimum control of risks. Provide training to supervisors to implement a self-inspection program.
* Work collaboratively with the Chief Risk Management Officer and other leaders to ensure appropriate safety policies and procedures are in place and adhered to.
* Promote awareness of health and safety requirements at the College; communicate with staff and faculty regarding safe operating practices and requirements.
* Develop and maintain manuals, systems, and records that provide for the proper evaluation, control and documentation of environmental, health and safety operations; prepare reports as required.
* Contract with consultants to perform monitoring, take samples, review or write policies, or evaluate environmental and safety risks.
* Maintain master files of MSDS, training completion, and other relevant information.
* Perform other related duties as assigned.

* Oversee Occupational Health & Safety Manager and student staff members.
* As the director, this position will work as a team member in providing services and support to all areas. This is accomplished through regular meetings and interpersonal relationships in support of the overall strategic objectives.
* In support of the mission and strategic goals of the university, the manager is responsible to develop, sustain, and continually assess and improve the effectiveness of Facilities Services.
* Identify and participate in resolution of departmental/institutional challenges with continuous quality improvement as a goal.
* Work collaboratively with the Facilities Services team in support of our mission.
* Participate in staff meetings, other meetings, and professional development/training workshops and seminars.
* Promote and support a professional environment that welcomes students, faculty, staff, and vendors, and enables them to access our services in an encouraging, organized, effective, and helpful way.
* As a member of the Facilities leadership team, this position is responsible for developing direct reports, managing and measuring work, and building an effective team.
* The manager, in coordination with HR and the associate vice president for facilities services, will hire, train, conduct performance reviews, take corrective action, provide positive rewards and feedback, and respond to complaints. This includes upholding the standards in the Code of Conduct and other university policies, modeling professionalism in all interactions, and respectfully hearing staff input and concerns either directly or from Human Resources.
This position has no direct budget management responsibilities but is expected to utilizes university resources responsibly.
* Requires Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or other related disciplines.
* 2-4 years' experience as an environmental health and safety professional or related work experience.
* Excellent interpersonal communication skills are required. Anticipate problems and communicate solutions before college staff and students are in jeopardy of injury.
* In-depth knowledge of chemistry.
* Communicative skills, both verbal and written.
* Knowledge of computer systems and software.
* Management skills.
* Supervisory experience.
* Demonstrated Problem-solving skills.
* Experience in developing and conducting safety-training programs/courses.
* Experience in implementing policies and rules related to work place safety and chemical hygiene.
* Must be able to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours as part of the on-call emergency response team.
* Must either have or obtain the 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operating and emergency response training.
* Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.
