Scenic Hudson seeks a Director of Science, Climate & Stewardship to provide leadership and primary oversight of science-related initiatives across the organization’s program areas. As the leader of the science program, the Director will serve as the primary ambassador and communicator of science topics to internal and external audiences. The Director manages a conservation science team that is responsible for a complex portfolio. Primary duties include: ecological restoration planning, natural resource stewardship and restoration on Scenic Hudson lands, technical assistance to land conservation and park management staff, ecological restoration projects, and review of development proposals. The Director is also involved in policy and advocacy efforts for conservation of biodiversity and natural resources, and regional climate change and climate resiliency response in the Hudson Valley and New York State.
Preferred candidate will have an M.S. (research) in Ecology, Conservation Biology or related field required, PhD preferred. At least five years of relevant professional experience with a conservation organization or environmental agency required (academic institution position with a demonstrated applied conservation component may substitute for a portion). Prior programmatic experience and/or publication history in one or more of the following topics: climate change adaptation or resiliency, systematic conservation planning, ecological restoration, spatial analysis, land stewardship. Ability to engage on a wide range of conservation-related issues, rapidly build personal/team expertise on new topics and issues, and develop strategic responses. Strong research, writing and verbal communication skills and experience translating complex technical and scientific issues in a manner that is understandable, approachable, and relevant to a broad range of audiences. Must be self-directed and have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of staff, partner organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders. Familiarity with land use planning/reviewing or stewarding conservation easements desirable. Understanding of environmental policy, government processes and environmental laws and regulations as they relate to impact on habitat and species protection, land use, and/or energy and infrastructure also desired. Must share a commitment to the mission and programs of Scenic Hudson. Previous supervision experience preferred. Must be able to carry 20lbs. over rough terrain in sometimes-inclement weather conditions. Must have valid driver’s license and own car for travel within the region. Occasional evening and weekend work required.
