This role will be responsible for creating the next generation of engineered mammalian cell lines, incorporating bleeding-edge technologies and scientific know-how to enable rapidly scalable and agile manufacturing of complex medicines. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of deep technical and scientific innovation in genome engineering and synthetic biology, coupled with a demonstrated track record of leadership and team management. They will help refine the overall vision, define technical roadmaps, and build & lead teams through challenging cell design challenges. They will work closely with engineering and process teams to create first-in-class solutions that can be deployed across the Resilience manufacturing network. This role requires excellent communication and creativity, backed by a high level of velocity and rigor.
Craft the vision and lead the successful implementation of a novel mammalian cell design and engineering program within Resilience R&D, incorporating current and new synthetic biology tools to design new production hosts with enhanced capabilities.
Manage key programs and projects across multiple teams, identifying non-obvious overlaps and areas of mutual benefit through new technologies or technique development.
Define and prepare project & experimental plans with clear objectives, managed risks, and aligned timelines across the Platform R&D team and broader Resilience R&D organization.
Hire and mentor a vibrant and diverse team of scientists to tackle problems from basic science R&D to applied development programs in close collaboration with engineering, process, and analytical teams.
Foster and operate a culture of rapid innovation and multidisciplinary learning.
Maintain a state-of-the-art knowledge on current methods and technologies, routinely monitoring new information sources in academic and trade literature and attending scientific conferences.
Communicate clear research aims, experimental designs, and technical roadmaps to senior leadership in Resilience R&D and other stakeholders across the Resilience ecosystem.
PhD degree in Biology, Engineering, Medicine or similar Life Sciences discipline.
12 + years of synthetic biology / genome engineering platform development skills.
5 + years managing a technical teams of scientists, engineers, and data scientists with proven success managing large, complex, cross functional projects and programs.
5+ years of experience in optimizing laboratory methods and workflows and scaling up microbial and mammalian genome design to enable high-throughput, data-driven laboratory operations.
Demonstrated understanding of modern synthetic biology approaches and genomic architectures to craft and control cell biology in conjunction with pieces of automation and machine learning technologies.
Successful track record of developing innovative therapeutic technologies related cell and/or gene therapy, such as pre-clinical R&D, novel instrument design, or novel assay development.
Effectively communicate and influence at all levels of the organization including C level executives, technical and non-technical stakeholders, team members and functional managers.
Deep understanding of methods and systems used in biomanufacturing, essential molecular biology and methods such as PCR, purification, gel electrophoresis, sequencing, and high dimensional cell characterization approaches.
Proven ability to effectively build relationships and achieve alignment across a wide range of functions and constituents.
Operate with a high degree of autonomy and professionalism in a fast-moving start-up environment.
Demonstrated experience with platform development across multiple operating environments: bleeding edge R&D, process development, and regulated biomanufacturing facilities
Demonstrated ability to understand, successfully integrate, and apply scientific and intellectual property literature, research data and technical input to meet program goals
Knowledge of and experience with molecular biology and/or synthetic biology experimental approaches.
Hands-on lab knowledge and experience with current and next-gen genome engineering and sequencing technologies.
Working knowledge of current and next-gen automation systems, bioinformatics, and machine learning as related to biology.
Pre-clinical R&D and IND filing for a cell or gene therapy product or technology
Knowledge of viral vector design (AAV, Lentivirus, Gamma retrovirus) and vector manufacturing processes
