Responsibilities

* Duties listed at full performance level:
* Perform fundamental timber cruising procedures including the measurement of tree diameter and height and the estimation of timber defect and quality.
* Identify local tree species, diseases, defects and other common characteristics important to selection of harvest trees.
* Serve as tally person or operate electronic field data recorders.
* Designate sale area and cutting unit boundaries on the ground.
* Use standard forest measurement tools such as diameter tape, tree calipers, clinometer, angle gauge, prism, compass, and increment borer.
* Report areas of possible archeological significance, and/or sightings of sensitive threatened or endangered wildlife species.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Basic Requirement: The education and/or experience described below is the Basic Requirement to be eligible and qualified for each grade level of the positions.

GS-04: Six months of general experience. Definition of general experience is the following: performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding/tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; worked in a green house, nursery or landscaping, e.g., planting, moving, watering and tending plants; worked as an animal caretaker in a laboratory, zoo or pet store; or other work experience, paid or unpaid, e.g., volunteer work at a park, youth camp, hospital, community sports league, local fire department, etc.

Also, in addition to the six months of general experience noted above, six months of specialized experience to at least the GS-03 grade level is required for this grade level. Examples of specialized experience are the following: performed natural resource support, e.g., forestry, range park technician, wildland firefighter, or similar jobs; performing routine support assignments in forestry specialty area, e.g., wilderness, timber, fire prevention/control, etc.

OR

Four seasons (a season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis) of qualifying specialized experience. This specialized experience includes the following: forestry aid or technician work; engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment; farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment and that provided a basic understanding of land use; forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work.

OR

Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

GS-05: One year of Specialized Experience at the GS-04 grade level. Definition of Specialized Experience is the following: performing crew-based forestry related support work such as selecting and marking individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines; silviculture prescriptions and specific instruction; and/or assisting in the measurement of limiting distances, tree diameter, tree height, estimation of defect and quality, and related fundamental timber cruising procedures.

OR

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree(a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semesters hours in mathematics are creditable.

GS-6: One year of Specialized Experience at the GS-05 grade level. Definition of Specialized Experience is the following: provided support with tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, traversing, use of aerial photos; and use of timber cruising tools and techniques; interprets silvicultural prescriptions and timber marking guides to designate harvest timber; measured amount and quality of timber in designated timber sale areas; applied instructions issued in a cruise plan.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
