Job Description

Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) has an immediate need for a mid-level to senior-level science & technology professional to work in a small science and scientific programming Research and Development team on site at the Air Force Research Laboratory at the Kirtland AFB, NM location.

AERs R&D efforts at AFRL span basic and applied research, software development and integrated technology support in the areas of space environment and space weather. AER supports operations regarding the data collection, processing and distribution of both satellite and ground-based measurements. In addition, candidates will also support of science related activities including model software verification and validation, data analysis and visualization, model development and transition of science grade models to operational products and applications. Additional key activities will include supporting proposal preparation. The successful candidate will have strong technical skills.

Qualifications

Background in space weather and/or satellite ground data processing systems is highly desirable.

Advanced degree in physical sciences, engineering, physics or related field preferred. Experience with an emphasis in computational science, science-oriented programming and/or data analysis and visualization. Strong technical and communication skills, problem solving and customer interaction skills in a fast-paced R&D environment. Strong publication and proposal track record a plus.

Ability to obtain security clearance and US citizenship required.

The Following Are Required
  • Background in Data Analytics, Machine Learning, or Scientific Modeling
  • Strong Python programming skills using advanced scientific modules and visualization techniques
  • Familiarity with C/C++ or Java
  • Development experience in Linux
  • Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for rapidly learning and applying new software technologies to complex problems
  • Pathfinder, self-managed with strong team communication
The Following Are Desired
  • An understanding or background in signal processing, RF propagation and/or wave propagation.
  • Interest in remote sensing/satellites, physics, meteorology or other geophysical sciences
  • Demonstrated experience in software development of scientific, geospatial or engineering applications
  • Experience developing and deploying applications for AWS
