Report directly to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.

Responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of environmental, chemical and biological hazards.

Develop and administer environmental, chemical and biological training programs for faculty, staff, and students.

Perform and document routine inspections for compliance with all applicable environmental, hazardous waste and laboratory regulations.

Provide oversight and technical/regulatory support for day-to-day environmental compliance and regulatory reporting tasks for air, stormwater, hazardous waste, spill prevention and emergency response for all University facilities.

Prepare environmental permit renewal applications and state and EPA regulatory submittals (e.g., NPDES, air emission inventories, hazardous waste reports).

Provide oversight for the stormwater management program in accordance with West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.

Develop and implement policies, programs, information tracking programs, and other storm water program components as required.

Provide technical advice to research, clinical and educational communities within the University; collaborate with and advise the Office of Research Integrity, Research Corporation, Biosafety Officer, Radiation Safety/Chemical safety Officer, Principal Investigators, students and staff in the assessment of hazardous situations involving infectious agents, recombinant DNA, biological toxins and radioactive isotopes; provide assistance with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to minimize the overall risk for chemical, biological and radiological issues; participate in the review of recombinant DNA and infectious agent protocols; serve as the Alternate Responsible Official for Select Agent Laboratories; assist in the maintenance of the biological safety manual and chemical hygiene manual; provide guidance and assistance on entrance and exit interviews with those persons responsible for any lab on campus; provide oversite and assistance with lab cleanouts; scheduling and performance of annual fume hood inspections; and coordinate programs and activities with other Environmental Health and Safety program areas such as GIS mapping, database management, occupational safety, and safety training as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (include certifications)

Experience in storm water management project design and management, knowledge of WVDEP and medical waste permitting processes; ability to make independent decisions. Working knowledge of biosafety, radiation safety and chemical safety.

Required Education

B.S. Degree in Environmental Science, Safety or science related field; May substitute five years' experience in an environmental or related field

Required Experience

Experience in storm water management project design and management, knowledge of WVDEP and medical waste permitting processes; ability to make independent decisions. Working knowledge of biosafety, radiation safety and chemical safety.

Excellent organizational skills: ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work and meet multiple deadlines. Self-directed with the ability to motivate others. Proficient in Microsoft Office, GIS and data management software applications

Preferred Education

Master's degree.
