WORK SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION

We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible schedule to work weekends, holidays, and occasionally after hours for special assignments. Our Gardener work schedule is 6 am to 3 pm, a rotating weekly schedule, and the compensation for this position is $16.38.

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A SENIOR HORTICULTURIST

As a Senior Horticulturist, you will perform various tasks related to planting, cultivating, and caring for ornamental plants and shrubs used to beautify the Zoo grounds. The position is also responsible for the overall maintenance of the Zoo property. You must be a self-motivated and knowledgeable horticulturist who can work alone. You will assume a leadership role and are frequently involved in training team members assigned to the department. The more unusual or difficult problems are referred to the department manager. You will report to the Horticulture Manager verbally and in writing of work accomplished and in progress weekly for project and schedule updates.

You must be fully committed to San Antonio Zoo's mission to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wildlife we steward and the animals we protect. You take pride in knowing your hard work is making a difference in wildlife conservation.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SENIOR HORTICULTURIST
  • Associate degrees in conservation, plant science, horticulture, or related field experience may be substituted for education. Substitute Ratio: Two years of related experience may be substituted for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience.
  • Two years of experience in the grounds maintenance industry and caring for plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns common to south Texas.
  • Must obtain the Texas Structural Pest Control Service Certified Applicators License from the Texas Department of Agriculture within six months of employment.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
  • Become pest control certified within the first year of employment.
  • Ability to start and safely operate powered equipment such as mowers, tillers, hedgers, string weed trimmers, chain saws, motor vehicles, and standard gardening tools such as but not limited to rakes, shovels, shears, clippers. Equipment is not limited to this list.
  • Initiative and follow-through and the ability to multi-task, set priorities, and maintain a positive attitude at increased workload are crucial.
  • Good organizational skills are required, with strong attention to detail in all tasks.
  • Successful candidates will also work productively and positively in a team-oriented environment and/or independently.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.
  • We enjoy year-round operation for all staff, must be available day, nights, weekends, and occasional special after-hour assignments.
