The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Portland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Cellular and Molecular Biology with a start date of August 15, 2022. This position is part of a cohort hire in the disciplines of Biology, Political Science, Psychology, and Communication Studies. The successful candidate will be housed in the Biology Department and may have the opportunity to be involved in a new Ethnic Studies undergraduate program that works across disciplines.

The Department of Biology, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University of Portland are committed to diversifying our curriculum and our faculty. We are committed to transformative social justice, anti-racism, and equity work with an intersectional lens. To advance our efforts in these areas, we are particularly interested in candidates who have experience successfully engaging with students from under-represented groups, including those with queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, people of color (QTBIPOC) identities. The successful candidate will have demonstrated lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity, and inclusion work within or transferable to higher education; these should be described in the cover letter and teaching statement.

Founded in 1901, the University of Portland is a private, comprehensive Catholic university with a mission (https://www.up.edu/about/mission.html) of teaching and learning, faith and formation, service and leadership. In the Department of Biology, we see our work developing the whole person and preparing people who apply scientific thinking to the needs of our biosphere as aligning with the University mission. Candidates should articulate their understanding of the university mission in their cover letter and highlight its compatibility with their approach to teaching, scholarship, and service.

The successful candidate for the tenure-track Assistant Professor in the broad area of Cell and Molecular Biology will be expected to periodically teach Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology and an accompanying lab. They will have the option to teach at least one upper-division biology course, in either Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics, or to develop a new course in their specialty area. The department is interested in candidates that bring expertise in areas not currently represented in the department (https://www.up.edu/biology), but it is not required. We encourage candidates who could initiate productive research collaborations with existing faculty.

The successful candidate will: (1) use inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices and active-learning pedagogy (2) develop a research program that is accessible to undergraduate students and supported by external funding sources, (3) teach 9 contact hours per semester, hold regular office hours, and provide academic advising, (4) engage in service to the Department, College, University, and professional community, and (5) serve in a future leadership position in the department post-tenure and promotion. The Ph.D. degree is required and evidence that the candidate has the potential to publish peer-reviewed literature after accepting the position is preferred because peer-reviewed publications are required to achieve promotion to the associate professor level.

To apply, please submit the following documents via https://up.hiretouch.com:
  • Cover letter articulating qualifications that will contribute to ongoing efforts to diversify curriculum and faculty (outlined above) and an understanding of the university mission
  • A teaching statement with your philosophy of teaching, prior teaching experience, and specific examples of teaching effectiveness, especially as it pertains to under-represented students. The teaching statement should describe your lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity & inclusion work within or transferable to higher education, as well as how you see your approach to teaching, scholarship, and service as aligning with the University of Portland's mission.
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Research Statement (described below)
  • The names and contact information for three references; recommendations will be solicited from short-listed candidates on or around October 15th.

Along with the application materials mentioned above, the Cell and Molecular Biology candidate should submit a research statement that consists of the following. 1) a brief (0.5-1 page) introductory statement summarizing your most significant research contributions in graduate school, a postdoc, or previous place of employment, making clear how these contributions prepared you for your research plan, 2) your research plan (2 pages max), including ways to involve undergraduates as collaborators and balance research productivity with teaching load, 3) a plan (0.5-1 page) for how to include students currently under-represented in STEM in your research, 4) a list (0.5-1 page) of essential equipment (each >$1000) and supply needs.

Application review will begin on October 1st. A background investigation check is required before final hiring procedures can be completed for all faculty and staff positions.

Please direct any questions to Dr. Ryan Kenton (kenton@up.edu).
