Axcella is a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering the research and development of novel multi-targeted interventions to treat complex diseases and improve health. Our product candidates are generated from our proprietary, human‑focused development platform and harness the power of endogenous metabolic modulators (EMMs), a broad family of molecules that fundamentally impact and regulate human metabolism.

We are growing quickly as we advance in the clinic, and we are seeking exceptional people to join our team. We value bright minds, collaborative spirits and a willingness to think outside the box.

Axcella Health is seeking a Senior Director to join our dynamic Research Team in Cambridge, MA in a laboratory and discovery program leadership position. In this role s/he will work collaboratively across R&D to develop and advance endogenous metabolic modulator (EMM) candidates through thee discovery pipeline, elucidate mechanisms of action from exploratory clinical studies and studies in primary cell culture, as well as metabolomics/genomics studies. The scientific focus of this role is to lead and inform candidate advancement through non-clinical and clinical development and characterize dysregulated biologies in complex diseases such as Cirrhosis and NAFLD/NASH to build our understanding of how EMMs can impact these biologies. A deep understanding of human metabolism with experience in aspects of cellular energetics is essential, with knowledge of amino acid metabolism highly desirable. The candidate will be expected to thrive in the fast paced, dynamic, and nimble environment of a biotech company that depends on strong collaboration internally (e.g. clinical, clinical pharmacology, computational biology) and externally (e.g. academics and CROs).
  • Lead the design, planning, execution, and interpretation of translational experiments using in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro systems with an emphasis on human primary cell models
  • Generate insights from non-clinical experiments (cell biology and animal studies) to inform mechanism of action and clinical development
  • Analysis of clinical and non-clinical experiments using targeted (amino acids and derivatives, mitochondrial function, metabolic signaling pathways, stable isotope tracers) and untargeted (proteomic, metabolomic, transcriptomic) techniques
  • Reporting and documentation of research and non-clinical activities for regulatory purposes e.g. IND, filing
  • Represent Research in cross-functional Product Development Teams
  • Leverage a network of external CROs, scientific advisors, and consultants
  • Prepare effective materials for publications, posters and meetings, and corporate presentations
Skills and Attributes
  • Strong cell biology skills: knowledge of primary cell culture is required; experience with hepatocytes, myotubes and/or immune cells is strongly preferred
  • Proven track record of good experimental design, in-depth data analysis, and interpretation based on strong scientific rationale
  • Knowledge of regulatory space and knowledge of the role of research in early and late clinical development
  • Experience with summarizing and documenting research and non-clinical development for regulatory documents and submissions e.g. IND, filing
  • Good lab leadership, flexible, and able to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team in a highly dynamic, biotech environment
  • Proven ability to collaborate and communicate in a cross-functional environment with Clinical and/or Commercial teams
  • Ability and experience presenting your work, internally and externally
Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or relevant field with a minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience.
Joining Axcella Health offers the potential to be part of a groundbreaking organization. We are growing quickly as we advance in the clinic, and we are seeking exceptional people to join our team. We value bright minds, collaborative spirits and a willingness to think outside the box.
