Senior Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Associate

Sr Associate II, EHS

About This Role
This position provides Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) support to Biogen's Cambridge operations, which includes R&D laboratory operations.


This position also supports compliance and risk management activities related to biosafety, radiation safety, vivarium safety, emergency preparedness and response, general laboratory safety, and other programs as assigned.

As a member of the Cambridge EHS team, you will work closely with peers, manager, client groups, and Corporate EHS to implement EHS programs in accordance with the Global EHS Policy and Management System.

What You'll Do
The Sr. EHS Associate II will implement EHS programs as assigned and drives continuous improvement efforts aimed at managing EHS risks. Primary duties are listed below:

Major Accountabilities include:
  • Acts as Biosafety Officer (BSO) responsible for managing the implementation and continuous improvements to the Biosafety Program including facilitating the Cambridge Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and performing Biosafety Risk Assessments.
  • Participates in IACUC
  • Acts as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) responsible for managing a third party vendor who implements the Radiation Safety Program including license management, training, chairing radiation safety committee, records management, and execution of associated compliance tasks.
  • Manages Emergency Preparedness and Response Program including developing and maintaining Emergency Response procedures, coordinating evacuation drills and as tabletop training exercises, and leading After Action Reviews following an emergency response.
  • Provides leadership, daily oversight, and continuous improvements of EHS
  • Programs with the focus on Biosafety, Radiation Safety, IACUC, controlled substances, animal allergies, respiratory protection, and body fluid donor program.
  • Maintains awareness of EHS regulations and completes EHS compliance activities.
  • Provides hands-on EHS support for laboratory safety.
  • Creates and develops relationships with internal clients.
  • Ensures written programs are reviewed and updated as required.
  • Develops EHS training materials and delivers classroom and on-the-job training.
  • Assists with incident investigations, root cause determinations, and identification of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Conducts EHS inspections, documents findings, works with area owners to implement corrective actions, and communicates results.
  • Participates in EHS stakeholder engagement events and activities.
  • Provides hands-on EHS support for laboratory design and construction projects.
  • Works with other EHS team members to support safety across site.
  • Participates in risk assessment evaluations to ensure the identification of high risks and associated risk reduction corrective actions.
  • Participates in emergency response, including on-call.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in life sciences, environmental field, or another related field.
  • 8+ years of experience implementing EHS programs including Biosafety and Radiation Safety.
  • Understanding of EHS management systems.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional certification (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Health Physicist, Certified Biosafety Professional).
  • Involvement with professional associations as a participant.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills focused on collaboration, innovation, and inclusion.
  • Experienced presenter and speaker; excellent writing skills.
  • Experience with interacting with external regulatory agencies.
  • Previous EHS related work experience in Biopharma field.
