The following position is for Alkermes, Inc.


Alkermes is seeking a Vice President to lead our CNS Biology Department within Research. The successful applicant will join the Research Leadership team and report directly to SVP of Research.

The CNS Biology group is responsible for all aspects of disease biology in our neuroscience projects. Our interest spans neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric indications. The VP of CNS Biology will be responsible for continuing to develop our expertise as well as internal and external capabilities in our synaptic dysfunction platform. This entails the structure and function of synapses and the neurocircuitry as well as neuroimmunology aspects.

  • Leads the CNS Biology department by providing clear leadership
  • Responsible for the strategic direction of the CNS Biology department and as part of the Research leadership team
  • Contribute and execute the strategic direction of the Research function
  • Responsible for the recruitment of a highly functioning and collaborative team of scientists and foster a climate of creativity, innovation and scientific excellence
  • Accountable for managing all aspects of the output from the department including the overall scientific quality
  • Accountable for managing internal and external capabilities and to build them to fulfill future needs. This includes the evolvement of our synaptic dysfunction platform with associated in vivo, ex vivo, primary cell and iPSC efforts
  • Exploration of new targets and novel biology to support internal drug discovery efforts
  • In collaboration with other functions, will be responsible for the rapid development of innovative, high quality drug candidates.
  • Preclinical support of ongoing development programs in neuroscience with e.g. indication expansion and translational studies
  • Member of our neuroscience business development triage team
  • Accountable for clear communication of objectives and priorities in the department
  • Accountable for calibrated performance reviews for the department members
  • Accountable for staff development in science and manager roles by identifying growth opportunities and training needs and gaining of cross-functional expertise
  • Ensure high standards for safety, health, environment and governance compliance

  • PhD, or equivalent with 15-20 y ears industry experience including a significant number of years leading teams of highly qualified personnel is required
  • Significant experience in a drug discovery environment, including key membership in discovery projects and a proven track record of innovation and delivery of candidate drugs is required
  • Comprehensive understanding of drug discovery disciplines outside own core expertise
  • Track record in mentoring and developing scientists and to create an environment that is highly collaborative striving for scientific excellence is required
  • In-depth people management experience and extensive experience in leading, motivating, developing and organizing personnel
  • Ability to keep up to date with current developments in the field and implement new practices and technologies to keep the department at the forefront in the industry
  • Track record in external collaborations with academia, CROs and strategic partners
  • Track record in working closely and collaboratively with other drug discovery and development functions
