Group/ Team Leader Integrated X-ray based structural biology and dynamics
We are seeking to recruit a group leader with expertise in small angle X-ray scattering methods to develop and oversee X-ray based structural biology research and services at the present PETRA III and the future PETRA IV synchrotron.Areas of high interest are new approaches for time-resolved structural studies, for structural studies of intrinsically unfolded proteins, and for bridging molecular structural biology into cellular/organismal imaging.

EMBL's future scientific directions, From Molecules to Ecosystems, include a vision to advance our understanding of ecosystems at the molecular level, applying expertise in molecular biology to study life in its natural context. New research areas will focus on applying experimental, computational and theoretical approaches to study at multiple levels (molecules, cells, tissues and populations) how organisms interact with each other and respond to environmental change. New approaches will be developed both for future EMBL research activities and external services.

Within this concept, the EMBL Hamburg Unit will continue to develop its research services for X-ray crystallography (MX) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), including facilities for sample preparation and characterization. Our services are complemented by a research program comprising membrane protein complexes, integrative structural modeling approaches, and X-ray imaging of cellular structures and organisms. Here we are looking for a candidate with main expertise in the field of biological SAXS technical developments and applications as well as a strong interest for combining this expertise with other methods. Areas of interest are time-resolved studies of structural dynamics, development of new concepts for understanding disordered parts of protein complexes, as well as integrative approaches bridging molecular structural biology and cellular imaging.

Your role
  • Establish an independent and innovative research program towards new SAXS approaches on biological samples, encompassing experimental, technical and/or computational developments.
  • Contribute to the operation and development of the EMBL research infrastructures at PETRA III, as well as preparing, implementing and operating future EMBL research infrastructures in structural biology at the planned PETRA IV synchrotron storage ring.
  • Integrate and combine future SAXS applications with other methodologies in structural biology, as implemented across different EMBL sites.
  • Engage into an advanced external and internal training program, with emphasis on high-end methodology and instrumentation.

Requirements

You have:
  • A PhD in a relevant research area, and a proven post-doctoral research record in a relevant field.
  • Profound expertise in Small angle X-ray scattering and/or related biophysical and structural biology methods.
  • Proven track record of developing new technologies.
  • Strong motivation to work in a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.
  • A concise research plan with clearly outlined, original and ambitious research goals.
  • In addition, you should be dedicated to develop effective relationships and to provide leadership and guidance to team members.
  • The ability to work independently and to participate in a collaborative team effort is desirable, as is a pro-active and positive problem solving mind-set.
  • Fluency in English is essential.

EMBL appoints group leaders from early on in their career and provides also a very supportive environment for your first independent position in order to achieve your research goals. The initial management training (the "Lead your Lab" course) is provided for all new incoming group leaders.

EMBL offers a highly collaborative, uniquely international culture. The various EMBL units are strongly connected and cross-unit collaborations are not only possible but also strongly encouraged. It fosters top quality, interdisciplinary research by promoting a vibrant environment consisting of young independent research groups with access to outstanding graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and core facilities. EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family-friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits. EMBL is committed to internationality, diversity and equality, and as such encouragesapplications from underrepresented groups.

What else you need to know...

We are Europe's flagship research laboratory for the life sciences - an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from more than 80 countries, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome. Further information about research at EMBL Hamburg and CSSB can be found on the respective web pages .

In your online application, you will be asked to include a cover letter, your CV, the names and contact details of 3 referees (who will be contacted to provide us with LOR) and a concise description of research interests & future research plans, typically not exceeding five pages. Should you plan to submit your application close to the deadline, please inform your referees in advance so they can be ready to send their LOR preferably by the deadline of the call.

Further information about the position can be obtained from Matthias Wilmanns . Interviews are planned to take place on the Sept/October 2021.

The same interview conditions will be applied to all candidates, despite potential travel restrictions
due to COVID-19.

Information on Group Leader appointments can be found here http://www.embl.org/gl_faq .

An initial contract of 5 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This is foreseen to be extended to a maximum of 9 years, subject to an external review.
