The Chesapeake Planning Department is seeking to fill a Planner II position to participate in a variety of current and long-range planning activities. The Planner II serves as a project manager to coordinate planning activities related to studies, plans, programs, and/or development applications. The City of Chesapeake is a growing community of over 247,000 and anticipates new development projects and exciting planning initiatives soon. Located in the heart of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area and considered one of the region's safest communities, the city features a fast-developing urban center in the Greenbrier mixed-use area, diverse urban, suburban and rural settings, an outstanding public school system, and treasured environmental assets such as the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

The successful candidate for this position will be self-motivated and will exhibit a responsive and eager approach to seeking positive outcomes in their interactions with the public, investors, and colleagues. In fulfilling the diverse duties of the position, the Planner II will research available resources; collect, organize, and maintain a variety of data; provide well written staff reports, memoranda, and other correspondence; coordinate or supervise the activities of others; work independently and with teams; attend staff meetings, training, and public meetings; and performing other related duties in support of department and City functions.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires a bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience in planning or a closely related field. A master's degree is preferred. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Depending on operational needs, may require a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with the City's Driving Standards. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
