More specifically, the Biology Technical Specialist provides support to Biology teaching labs. Responsible for the general operation, preparation, and maintenance of Biology laboratory courses in the fields of Environmental Studies, Plant and Animal Studies on the Arnold campus. Maintains supplies, equipment, and lab
instrumentation; prepares reagents; maintains the physical environment of the labs; and ensures compliance with established safety practices and hazardous waste procedures. Contributes to the AACC/Biology Environmental Center as needed. Other duties as assigned by Department Chair and Laboratory Manager.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
What you Will do in this role
Prepare laboratory experiments for assigned courses, setting out all relevant slides, models, apparatus, and audio-visual supplements. Accurately prepare required solutions, reagents, unknowns, and media following detailed preparation manuals. Assemble required demonstrations. Assist other technical specialists in preparing and setting out materials for other Biology laboratories as requested.
Maintain laboratory exercises and demonstrations across multiple sections. Resolve technical problems that are encountered during the execution of laboratory exercises. Perform laboratory experiments when necessary to assure reproducible student results, and make adjustments to improve techniques or results. Test new laboratory exercise protocols. Create new preparation procedures and update preparation manuals as required.
Monitor and maintain inventory of all required chemicals, equipment, slides, and supplies for identified courses. Generate purchase order requisitions and procurement card purchases as necessary . Develop and follow purchasing timeline for living organisms and perishable items based on course syllabi. Make local supply purchases when necessary. Contact vendors for competitive quotes for equipment.
Organize laboratories, classrooms, prep rooms, stock rooms and the Science tutoring center and maintain in a neat and orderly manner at all times. Assure that all appropriate materials are available to faculty and students to support laboratory experiments. Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment as needed. Advise laboratory manager of replacement needs. Generate work requests to address building maintenance needs.
Provide general assistance to faculty and students as required. Assist with course-related software. Provide support to instructors in the use of computers, microscope cameras, and audio-visual equipment in the laboratories. Direct work/study and/or temporary employees on the Arnold campus.
Follow and promote established safety procedures by maintaining a safe work environment, performing weekly safety checks, and adhering to appropriate hazardous and infectious waste collection procedures. Maintain safety equipment; assure safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials. Create work orders to address safety issues.
Support of Student Engagement
Assist with the coordination and supervision of student volunteers, service learning students, interns and student workers on biology and Environmental Center related projects.
Required Qualifications:
What you will bring to this position
The work requires moderate physical exertion with long periods of standing, repetitively lifting lightweight objects with frequent bending or stooping. Work also involves the recurring lifting of moderately heavy items (under 50 pounds). Occasionally the work may include lifting heavy items (over 50 pounds). Job requires average agility and dexterity.
Employee is regularly exposed to unfavorable environments such as weather, bodily fluids, toxic laboratory and industrial chemicals, or confined, dirty and noisy locations. In the performance of their duties, employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as face masks, goggles, boots, gloves or eye shields.
Minimum Level of Experience Required: Two to five years of relevant experience Minimum Level of Education Required: A Bachelor's degree
Other Minimum Requirements:
· Proficiency in use of PC-based computers required and Microsoft Office.
· Ability to work a flexible 40-hour weekly schedule to accommodate the needs of the laboratory schedule. Ability to maintain confidentiality of testing materials.
· Ability to work with minimal supervision with attention to details and deadlines.
· Ability to work effectively and tactfully with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and the public.
· Demonstrated ability to work collegially with a culturally diverse group of faculty, students and staff on a regular basis.
Preferred Qualifications:

· Degree in Biology preferred.
· Strong background in plant, animal, and environmental science related courses.
· Ability to maintain systems used in the care of plants, animals, and aquatic organisms Experience with greenhouse management
· Relevant fieldwork experience
