Introduction:

As an Envronmental Field Specialist, you will be joining our ChemCare business unit. ChemCare delivers tailored end-to-end sustainable waste management solutions. As a national provider of complete and unbiased environmental programs and support, ChemCare from Univar Solutions works with manufacturing, industrial, and municipal customers to create safe, cost-effective programs that drive sustainability.

Through a variety of service offerings, our customers can outsource any piece of their waste stream, from waste services that involve chemical handling, recycling, reuse and disposal; to industrial services like tank cleaning, site remediation or high-pressure water blasting; to emergency response and training. Our goal is to fill the gaps in your operation so your staff can focus on your core business.

Location:

We are looking for qualified candidates based in (or open to relocate to) the San Diego, CA area.

Primary Purpose:

Service Representative (Industrial or Field) provides Customer Service, Logistical Support, Waste Management Support, and Guidance. Responsible for handling, processing, packaging, and tracking hazardous waste for shipment, treatment, and disposal. Manage hazardous materials reports and documentation. Participate as part of the emergency response team and respond to hazardous materials spill/releases during and after hours.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work in a safe manner, constantly striving to the goal of zero accidents and incidents.
  • Comply with the company's policies, safety rules and procedures regarding the proper use of safety equipment and safe work practices.
  • Report all incidents, injuries, property damage, "near misses", etc. immediately.
  • Participate in safety meetings, assisting in safety investigations.
  • Continue reviewing and learning the contents of pertinent safety manuals, handbooks, and publications.
  • Utilize and encourage co-workers to use established avenues to solicit and receive information and assistance where safety and health is concerned. (Audits, accident/incident investigations, self-inspections, suggestion programs planning, training, job hazard analyses, safety and health committees and teams).
  • All employees are expected and required to adhere to all aspects of applicable safety programs, site specific rules, and regulations.
  • Completes self inspection reports in a timely manner as well as maintenance and housekeeping of assigned equipment.
  • Possess working knowledge and understanding of RCRA, DOT, and OSHA regulations and apply them as they affect the storage, transportation, and disposal of waste (both Hazardous and Non-Hazardous waste).
  • Possess the ability to prepare and/or confirm the accuracy of all shipping paperwork.
  • Be able to complete a site inspection based upon predetermined criteria.
  • Collect profile information from customer for the completion and submittal of profile by ChemCare Technical Services (CCTS) to Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF).
  • Collect samples for waste characterization or re-certification and submit to CCTS, laboratory or TSDF.
  • Prepare waste containers for shipment according to applicable regulations.
  • Load or assist in loading waste containers on transport vehicle.
  • Operate a forklift and other required equipment at customer site, when properly certified.
  • Obtain endorsements or certifications that align with specific duties and responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties, as required.


Problem Solving:

Routine
  • Work in a safe manner to protect yourself as well as co-workers while meeting all governmental, state, and local regulations as well as customer, transporter, and disposal facility requirements ensuring the proper handling of waste generated at a particular site.
  • Identify and inform customer contact of any unsafe work condition or practice.

Difficult
  • Facilitate any issue between the customer contact, Univar Solutions, disposal facility and any subcontractor in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Provide team support and oversight of environmental, health and safety aspects of company operations for contractual and regulatory compliance. Responsible for performing duties in potentially hazardous environments in accordance with OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.


Interface:

This position will interact with the following stakeholders / teams: Sales, Field Service Representatives, ChemCare Coordinators, ChemCare Operations Supervisors / Manager, Customer, Transporter, TSDFs.

Decision Making Authority:

Lab Pack preparation, Identify and assist in the resolution of non conformance issues, proper handling of waste from storage, transportation, and disposal.

Knowledge/Skills:
  • Working knowledge of RCRA, DOT, and OSHA regulations.
  • Understanding of proper waste handling procedures.
  • Ability to provide customer service and technical service to customers.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles and skillfully operate forklift and other waste handling equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper PPE requirements and ability to determine proper usage in any given situation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office suite.


Education/Training:
  • ChemCare Technician level requirements plus (or equivalent):
  • B.S. degree in a science-oriented field (Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or similar subject matter) with one year of experience in waste handling.
  • Non degree with understanding and application of proper waste handling procedures with at least 5 years of field experience.
  • At least one year of experience dealing with customer service issues and the ability and experience to address technical RCRA, DOT and OSHA issues.
  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification or Refresher Certification.
  • Completion of OSHA Basic refresher training.
  • Successful ability to wear a respirator (Pass Respirator Fit Test).


Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Physical ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Physical strength to tilt up to a full 55 Gallon drum onto a drum dolly and move it.
  • Pass the company physical and drug screen tests. Participate in the company medical surveillance program and be certified to wear a respirator.
  • Potential exposure to fumes, dirt, noise, and hazardous chemicals daily. Use engineered or PPE to minimize any potential exposure.
  • 4 day work week, working from 12:00 pm to 10:30 pm PST.
