In this position you will be a member of Markit!'s sawyer team and you will manage sawyer crews to meet project deadlines.

Job Status: Full-time, temporary. This position could become permanent for the right candidate.

Duration of project: August-November 2021.
Location: Flagstaff, AZ

Travel: 0% during temporary project assignment, 75-100% if permanent

  • Conduct routine monitoring of prescription and contract specifications for the felling of trees, collection of dead and down woody debris and removal through helicopter yarding.
  • Support AZ Staff to monitor on-the-ground project implementation of forest treatments.
  • Monitor QA/QC of sawyer crew activities using GPS enabled devices and the Avenza Maps application
  • Support, assist, and monitor sawyer crew adherence to desired future conditions and post-treatment specifications.
  • Report on project stats, outcomes, and deliverables of sawyer activities to field supervisor, daily.
  • Adhere to and monitor project safety protocol.

  • 21 years of age or older
  • Availability and willingness to travel throughout the SW US, some overnight travel may be required.
  • Available for nights and weekends.
  • Valid driver's license. Due to work location, having reliable transportation is a MUST.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in steep, rocky and brushy terrain for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work in environmental conditions that may range from extreme heat and cold with rain or snow possible.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous forestry experience is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of forestry, forest silviculture and harvesting techniques.
  • Working knowledge of forest measurements and tool use (diameter tape, prism, clinometer etc.), fuel load estimation and basic timber inventory and cruising.
  • Working knowledge of GPS, GIS and digital mapping applications.
  • S-212 certification.
  • Experience working around logging equipment and other heavy machinery.
  • Ability to safely hike and navigate alone or in small groups in remote, steep mountainous areas using a map, compass, GPS and other digital mapping applications.
  • Good written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work independently in remote areas.
  • Spanish Speaking is a plus.
