Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA.'s buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

FM is seeking an Environmental Inspector to join our team. Environmental Inspectors will provide technical assistance focused on stormwater management and pollution prevention practices in facility construction, operations and maintenance projects, and in support of UVA's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit program. Environmental Inspectors will perform multiple tasks that include inspecting construction sites and post-construction stormwater management facilities providing guidance to staff and contractors on pollution prevention practices; and investigating potential illicit discharges. Other duties may also be assigned.

The Environmental Inspector should have the ability to:
  • Communicate effectively and work in a team environment
  • Analyze problems and develop effective solutions
  • Apply knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to real-world situations
  • Understand natural systems (stormwater, soil, waterways) and the human impacts

The hiring range for this position is $60,000-$65,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or environmental fields, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the position's duties.

Experience: At least one year of relevant experience.

This job requires obtaining and maintaining a dual Erosion & Sediment Control (E&SC) and Stormwater Management (SWM) Inspector's certification from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) as soon as possible and within one year of the start date. Continued employment is contingent on this certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Hold DEQ-issued certification as an E&SC and SWM Inspector.

Two or more years of experience conducting erosion and sediment control inspections.

Four to 7 years of relevant work experience highly preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The Environmental Inspector will work extensively on construction sites and outdoor environments.
