Job Summary
AECOM is actively seeking a talented Environmental Planner to work with the AECOM East Region, Mid Atlantic Impact Assessment and Permitting (IAP), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) team and be based in our Germantown, MD office. The successful applicant will join an Environmental Planning team and work with Environmental Planners in a collegial, intellectually-stimulating environment that fosters professional development. The successful applicant will join a network of existing AECOM IAP specialists across the US and will have the resources of more than 3,500 environmental planning and natural resources staff available in project delivery. We will consider excellent candidates in proximity any of our Eastern Region offices.
The emphasis of this position is on environmental impact assessment and NEPA reporting. Responsibilities will be varied to include such tasks as literature review; desktop research and analysis; regulatory review and analysis; report preparation (technical writing and editing, desktop publishing, etc.); stakeholder identification and coordination; and related administrative and project management support.
Applicants for this position must demonstrate general knowledge of the natural and man-made environments subject to evaluation in NEPA studies; specialization in one or more NEPA technical resource areas is a plus. This position requires a positive, resilient, self-starter with an ability to quickly learn on the job, adapt to changing circumstances, and effectively interface with internal and external project team participants. Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills are a prerequisite of employment.
The candidate will work as part of multidisciplinary teams that support the preparation of NEPA and other planning studies and reports.
Specific job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide research and technical writing to support development of environmental documents
- Assist to develop, describe, and evaluate alternative options for Federal agency programs, plans, and policies
- Set parameters for and develop baseline data for natural, cultural, and socioeconomic resources
- Interpret and apply environmental statutes, regulations and Executive Orders for compliance with relevant local, state, and federal laws
- Support regulatory consultations with resource management agencies
- Assist with client or stakeholder meeting preparation, facilitation, and documentation
- Participate as a field crew member to assist with multimedia sampling events, resource surveys, or site assessments

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geography, biology, ecology, natural resources, wetlands management, geology, other planning, or an earth science-related field + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in relevant field.
- Knowledge of and/or proficiency with spatial data analytical tools (e.g., ArcMap, CAD)
- Experience or familiarity with environmental consulting
- Team player that demonstrates professionalism and accountability
- High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting
- Demonstrated comprehension of NEPA process requirements
- Demonstrated research, writing, verbal, and organization skills
- Proficiency in word-processing and integrated software applications, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Candidate may be asked to travel and participate in field work
- Specific experience or knowledge in one or more NEPA technical resource areas
- First Aid / CPR training
- Other professionally relevant training or certification
- Excellent and relevant references
