Job Description

Duties: Working under the supervision of the Microbiology/Molecular Supervisor, will perform testing and follow-ups to the various methods and techniques used in the identification and isolations of microbial isolates from clinical specimens.

Responsibilities:
  • Follow the organization's policies and procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining patient test results and records.
  • Properly plate and incubate cultures according to stated departmental policies.
  • Perform gram stain testing and properly identify different organisms.
  • Be able to utilize additional testing methods and techniques to speciate and identify potential antimicrobial resistance.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and follow policies in treating and testing specimens in a manner similar to patient samples.
  • Review and release test results in a sound, objective, manner.
  • Follow federal, state, local and organizational guidelines and policies with regards to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety.
  • Adhere to the organization quality assurance program, document all quality control activity, follow policies regarding calibration and maintenance.
  • Properly escalate quality assurance issues appropriately and document all things that need to be followed up appropriately with proper communication and endorsement.
  • Follow the organization's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within established acceptable parameters and fail to meet the quality assurance guidelines.
  • Identify and escalate, appropriately, problems that can affect test performance or timely reporting of results, when corrective actions are needed and when need to be escalated.
  • Document all corrective actions are taken when test systems deviate from the organization's established quality assurance program.
  • Follow the organization's policies regarding the handling of STATs, Critical and Special Handling cases.
  • Answer questions from the customer and other laboratory personnel appropriately and in timely manner.
  • Maintain proper and complete records of all testing performed during the shift.
  • Maintain the proper appearance of the working environment and provide safety monitors during the shift.
  • Make sure all supplies have appropriate received, expiration and in used (open) dates. Round at the end of the shift to make sure everything is properly documented and acknowledged.
  • Review and assist in the training of new procedures.
  • Attend departmental meeting and any additional training/educational meetings as assigned, including HIPAA and annual safety training.
  • Be able to participate and assist in preparation for regulatory inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology with at least 1 years' experience in high complexity testing in the disciplines of microbiology
  • Experience with reading gram stains and aerobic cultures plates
  • Certified as a Medical Technologist / Clinical Laboratory Scientist by ASCP, AMT or AAB, preferred.

Equipment:
  • Experience working with standard microbiological equipment/procedures - incubator, microscope, plating, gram stain, immunological single-use EIA kits, etc
  • Experience with Beckman Microscan and/or BioMerieux Vitek; preferred

Skills Required:
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to review test results and identify abnormal and unusual results.
  • Ability to investigate problems and assist in identifying the root cause and suggesting possible corrective actions.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs and stand for an extensive period.
