Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform functions to coordinate and monitor progressive safety, environmental and security compliance programs within departmental operations regarding performance issues, working within the limits of standard or accepted practices and all applicable State and Federal laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Respect and lead team members to perform work responsibilities according to the United States Sugar Corporation's Mission and Value statements.
  • Inspect facilities within company properties for compliance with applicable safety and environmental standards.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement on security issues.
  • Prepare reports by recording observations made during inspection and submit to management.
  • Function as a Team Leader for internal inspections / audits of departmental facilities and processes.
  • Function as a Team Leader for external audits of contractors.
  • Maintain knowledge of changes in applicable environmental and safety regulations, laws, and court decisions.
  • Conduct incident investigations including root cause analysis and corrective actions

  • OTHER DUTIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specific level knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements and policies.
  • Perform or assist with any departmental operations, as required or directed to maintain workflow or respond to emergency conditions.
  • Establish and maintain healthy working relationships with State, Federal and local regulatory agencies and accompany their inspectors during inspections of facilities and contractors.
  • Preparation of training materials and make presentations for safety and environmental training of employees.
  • Participate in departmental safety committee meetings.
  • Preparation of corporate safety policies and departmental site-specific procedures.
  • Coordinate with Medical Administration in managing workers' compensation cases and potential modified duty candidates
  • Maintain consistent open lines of communication with Safety Manager and promote team atmosphere within the department and ensure open lines of communication with team
  • Set a good example with personal safety practices, company policies and rules, wearing personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of environmental and occupational safety issues and State and Federal laws and regulations governing such issues.
  • 1 - 5 years of safety experience with a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Environmental or equivalent field of study strongly preferred
  • Medical background (nursing, first responder, EMT) in lieu of regulatory, safety or environmental experience is acceptable.
  • Requires ability to conduct investigations, inspections and audits.
  • Requires ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing in English and Spanish.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with a diverse workforce.
  • Requires ability to research laws and interpret application to Company operations.
  • Use computer and peripherals, common office software and equipment, facilitator skills and methods to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Must possess knowledge of spreadsheet, graphics and internet computer software.
  • Must possess valid drivers' license

    Physical requirements also include the following but are not limited to:
    • Ability to freely access all areas of the farms and shops including offices, tractor sheds, repair shops farm and harvest equipment, loading elevators, fields, etc.
    • Ability to work varied hours and days.
    • Will be expected to work outside in all kinds of weather.
    • Will be expected to be available 24 hours per day, weekends, and holidays pursuant to a pre-planned on-call schedule
    • Must reside in the Clewiston / Belle Glade area to be able to respond to on-call situations in a timely fashion
