Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations. Location: Based out of La Grande, Oregon. Work to be conducted primarily on tributaries to the Grande Ronde River in Northeastern Oregon Anticipated Duration: August 2, 2021 - December 17, 2021 (These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project's control). To learn more about the department and the work we do, view the following video at https://myodfw.com/about Job Description: What you will do: Operate juvenile fish traps in the Grande Ronde River basin. Transport and assemble rotary screw fish traps. Anchor and install traps in rivers. Assess trap operation to ensure appropriate operation. Determine trap maintenance needs and repair trap. Conduct mark recapture estimates to determine trap efficiency. Survey juvenile fish populations. Seine juvenile fish in streams. Snorkel streams and count salmonids and other fishes in summer and winter conditions. Anesthetize fish using standard procedures. Count, measure, weigh, and collect scales from fish collected. Collect and record data using computerized data collection station. Tag wild juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead. Position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends and some night work. Please contact: Edwin.R.Sedell@odfw.oregon.gov Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g. identifying juvenile fish species (especially salmonids), collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, rotary screw trap operation, and tagging/marking fish) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position.
