Location: Omaha Public Schools Service Center, 4041 North 72 Street, Omaha, NE 68134
Reports to: Environmental/Safety Specialist
Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 261 days - 12 Months / 8 hours per day
Salary Schedule: This is a full-time non-negotiated position. Salary Grade: 91B
Position Purpose: Responsible for monitoring environmental programs such as indoor air quality, lead, radon, USTs, and chemical management. Responsible for the routine duties associated with responding to indoor environment concerns and the disposal of sanitary, special, and hazardous wastes. Will be required to participate in the federally mandated Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) 6-month periodic surveillance activities and small asbestos abatement responses. Employee will be required to undergo a medical examination as directed by the School District prior to employment.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
- Monitor and interpret data for a variety of environmental/safety programs.
- Generate written reports based on data collection.
- Maintain and properly use personal protective equipment used in response to asbestos abatement and hazard materials abatement including lead-based paint and chemical spills.
- Proper handling of hazardous waste including disposal procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of air emissions, work procedures, and hazardous waste manifests.
- Perform inspections, inventory, and other duties associated with the OPS environmental/safety programs.
- Understanding of proper engineering controls to prevent the spread of contaminates.
- Maintain and properly use district instruments used in environmental evaluations.
- Assist with training and maintaining records for 2-hour asbestos awareness and mercury spill clean-up for required staff.
- Responsible for maintaining underground storage tank (UST) program compliance including scheduling testing and supporting the lead detections systems.
- Document spill response, remedial actions, and indoor air quality activities on standard division forms.
- Other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum of an Associate Degree in a science discipline.
- Two years experience in an environmental/safety related occupation.
- Experience with indoor air quality investigations.
- Background knowledge of HVAC or Energy Management Systems a plus.
- Must be able to be certified as a hazardous materials handler (40-hour HAZWOPPER).
- Must be able to achieve licensing requirements as established by state programs for radon and lead.
- Required to attend training, obtain licensing and perform the duties of an asbestos abatement supervisor and/or inspector/management planner.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows operating system, including word processing, database and spreadsheet management.
- Have strong organizational skills, time management skills and be able to follow established procedures, including the ability to handle multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Must have good written and oral communication skills.
- Possess skills pertinent to positive human relationships and the ability to work effectively with staff members and community in a multicultural urban setting.
- Able to wear respiratory protection.
- Candidate must be able to lift 40 pounds.
- Body mobility which allows worker to stand, walk, climb, stoop and maintain balance.
- Employee will be required to undergo a medical examination as directed by the School District prior to employment.
- Valid driver's license.
